I’m thinking of getting one of these, likely starting with a three tower I’ve been doing a lot of research and reviewers are overwhelmingly in warm climates I would really like to know how these hold up in terms of durability in the winter before investing in one I won’t be able to move it indoors Comment from : Nikki |
Hi What kind of soil would you use for growing carrots and beets? How many plants per section/pot? Comment from : Linda Faulkner |
Thanks! Comment from : Patricia Pfahl |
I’ve had wild success with my greenstalks, so much that I bought 7 throughout my first year using them I’ve grown pretty much everything in them I just planted a lettuce tower and a carrot tower and I’ll be planting two cooking greens towers I also have a dedicated strawberry tower Over the summer I grew beans, eggplants, tomatoes and peppers in different towers I prefer to use a tower for only 1 or two similar plants because it’s easy to fertilize from the top so you want it to work for everything planted there Love greenstalk and bought them as gifts and will be getting myself even more Comment from : Unnamed |
Does lettuce really need to 10 inch depth on the vertical garden or can you get away with the seven? Comment from : Tim Favreau |
Very nice…I am actively looking for these more space efficient setups Thank you! Comment from : City Prepping |
I haven’t had good luck with tower planters I think my soil I used was to heavy and didn’t drain well Comment from : Ed W |
I’m new here (and to gardening 😅), but so glad I found your channel Kevin! You’re so informative! Thank you for your videos Question: do you think growing garlic in the green stalk would work well? Have you tried it? Comment from : Milena Meguerditchian |
I have two 7-tier green stalks and they're great! Last year we grew strawberries BUT we didn't protect them through the winter (zone 6) and unfortunately all but one of the strawberry plants died We have some in-ground strawberry plants, so I'm hoping we can save enough runners this year to fill up our towers again next year I have noticed that we have so many more pest problems with in-ground strawberries than in the towers, so I think that is an added reason to use the towers I just can't seem to get any ripe in-ground strawberries before the bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, and birds This year I've filled the towers with flowers for the pollinators Comment from : Corina Goodwin |
Thank you for sharing this Do you find that planting on specific levels for the different watering requirements of different crops is helpful? Also, have you tried scallions or other onions in these? Comment from : G M |
Tried to support your channel by ordering, but all the stuff I want says the sales code isnt valid :( Comment from : Timanator |
Are these contraptions sturdy to wind gusts up to 25 mph? I would really love to start growing more and these seem like a no brainer for small spaces I'd hate to invest in this if mother nature decides to queef high winds and knock over all of my hard earnings Comment from : Ho Patrol |
This vid is perfectly timed! I’ve convinced a handful of neighbors to adopt the greenstalk system on their decks for summer perfect tomatoes, peppers and herbs! Comment from : Kaylan Segev |
Off-topic, but Kevin, how big a grow bag would you recommend for indeterminate tomatoes? Any difference for cherry vs full-size tomatoes, both indeterminate? I'm looking at either 7 or 10 gallon bags Same question for indeterminate cukes? Thanks!brbrMaybe, you could do a video on pot/grow bag size recommendations for fruiting vegetables (tomatoes, cukes, squash, etc?) Comment from : rufia75 |
I live in zone 5 If I plant strawberries in this vertical garden and store it in my garage over winter will the strawberries grow again next year? Comment from : Brenda |

Last winter something happened to my strawberries and I didn't get much fruit but a lot of runners which I planted brThis year I'm going to have a ton of Strawberries :) Comment from : Raymond Clark |

This is such a great idea, did you mentioned cherry tomatoes? Can I grow baby spinach? It's just me but if I can grow a few of my own stuff, what a savings and fresh from the garden Thanks for the suggestions for small spaces, does it matter if it's in an enclosed patio? Comment from : Carmen N |
Recycle holy buckets folks No need to buy more Comment from : Stormy |
Just planted my first greenstalk yesterday and I already think I need a second one! Comment from : Shannon B |
We got some of the stackables at the dollar tree They are quite a bit smaller than the greenstalks BUT for $1 ya cant beat em Comment from : Abundant Acres Homestead |
I bought one of these last year coz of this channel and these planters have awful drainage 😂 it rotted out everything I planted Gonna drills crapload more holes in the bottom this year and try again but the whole concept of each tower level watering the one below it really did not work out at all Maybe if you live in an incredibly dry place with no rainfall They’re also really tricky to plant by yourself without destroying the foliage of whatever you’ve put in on the level beneath it Comment from : halfcockedgirl |
Is it possible to add the Arabic language to the translation list? Comment from : Mtv Channel |
Thank you for sharing beautiful and amazing plants lovely collection ❤❤ Comment from : Jillian LeBlanc |
This is a great video and content I need as a new grower Just give me instructions and I’ll do it 🌱 🪴 Comment from : LydJaGillers |
I’m hoping to put two green stalks in my garden eventually I have so much to do and that’s sort of in the tale end of my list The expansion is so big I have to break it up I’d say 80 was done this year Fence expansion tripling my space, replacement of all raised beds to be metal, two new trellises, blueberries, apples, a memorial garden/pollinator habitat, and so much mulch…I have another trellis, 6 raised beds and a greenhouse to get in over this fall/winter Hoping to finally just plant and maintain next spring Fingers crossed So much learning, so much work but it’s so rewarding and looking exactly how I imagined Comment from : Catie Power |
How stable are these? Or is there a way to secure them to make them less likely to tip? Comment from : The Feral Homestead |
I have four towers of the vertical deeper pots I grew green onions, kale, carrots, spinach and currently doing beans Unfortunately I can not do strawberries as squirrels keep after them I have containers that hang on fence and we covered with a frame make of pvc pipe and hung netting Nope, still gets in Good luck! Comment from : CJ |
Can I get this in Australia? Comment from : John whitton |
I have 5 originals and 1 leaf and 2 towers I made out of a 32 gal tall trash can with holes made by a holesaw and a pvc pipe in the middle for water and feeding All did fantastic for bush beans last year I also got a decent yield for small saldette and cherrry tomatoes and jalepeno peppers as well as several herbs My petunias and nasturtium did well in them too I am switching from spring to summer plants in them now but the Swiss chard did outstanding and the spinach, brocolli rabe and asian cabbage did well too Love these planters Comment from : Jennifer Davidek |
I bought my very 1st Greenstalk after watching your video on growing beans Now I have 6 and I use mine to grow lettuce, beans, strawberries, and misc items to see how they do compared to in my raised beds I've tried Carrots, Peppers, Cherry Tomatoes, Jalapeno, Serrano peppers, Ancho chili peppers and Swiss Chard Comment from : Toni Miles |
Is that a jacaranda tree in the background? Comment from : saulithyia |
So, how deep of a pot do you need for strawberries? Comment from : Dana Galloway |
I have 2 full towers of strawberries Comment from : Sam Ngo |
I’ve planted red and yellow onions in my green stalks brIt’s not complete failure but bulbs did not develop well Although leaves and stems grew so think Probably more to do with not enough or too much plant food and hot winter(Dry LA weather) And I had Black aphids infestation Also Noticed that higher top 3 layers grew better than bottom 2 layer It was amazing how much roots were developed in soil Almost too packed with roots that may be not enough soil for onions … brNext time if I do onions, I will just put it on every other pocket and only top 3 layers brBottom layers got more aphids than top brIt’s hard to feed plant on tower Whenever I give them fish &kelp water, Aphids or bug goes crazy over it brStill experimenting with this tower But I think strawberry is better idea than onions Comment from : Dog paws |
I agree growing lettuce and strawberry's and some of those others like Hurbs would grow great In a green stock Comment from : Jackie Horsley |
I planted a ton of strawberries this year but the bugs love the leaves! Comment from : Dylan |
I purchased 2 of the GreenStalk vertical planters late Sep 2021 I live in south Texas and planted seeds mid-Oct thinking I would have veggies by mid-Dec Wellthat didn't happen Guess I planted too late So mid-April, I directly planted green bean seeds, tiny yellow onion bulbs and leaf lettuce in the GS planter The green beans and onions germinated well and are growing nicely, but the leaf lettuce is a bust I direct seeded in the planter, and they aren't germinating well at all Not sure why Maybe it got too hot too soon for the lettuce to germinate What I have learned growing veggies in the vertical planter is - don't plant large veggies like turnips, kohlrabi, etc There just isn't enough surface space in one pocket for multiple veggies to grow big This year I am using grow bags too Kevin, I bought your book about grow bags, have enjoyed reading it and learned some great information from you The grow bags are doing well, much better than the vertical planter It got really hot here in April, which is unusual for this time of year, and has stayed hot I moved my grow bags and vertical planters under the outdoor pergola so they get some sun and shade with the overhead slats, hoping to ease the growing stress of 90°-100° temps If you have any tips or suggestions for a hot climate, I would love to know Thanks Comment from : B Richter |
