Finnish women tend to like simplicity We take international trends and turn them into a more 'Scandinavian' version by simplifying them The colour palette tends to be muted On the other hand, I think many of us tend to view fashion in terms of practicality We prefer things to be both practical and pretty Eg if it's raining, it's more important to wear big chunky rain boots than to look super chic On the other hand, if the boots are a cute colour, power to you

😂 English person here , but I was raised with French rules and my mum sister and I stuck out like a sore thumb in our village Neutral colours with an accent, a good quality coat for winter, with a nice pea jacket too, and a Mac for summer, leather boots black & brown, no jogging gear unless you are exercising, well fitting jeans mainly bootcut Dresses I love a tea dress, but mainly wear a light wool type black dress I don’t wear red lipstick as I’ve never found one to suit my fair colouring Really enjoying other countries choices Red, wine, pale pink nail varnish, red toes Relaxed but polished hair

Shelly Moon
Having lived in Germany and traveled to other parts of Europe, I noticed that many women dress in simple, classic styles I try to emulate this in my style, but it is hard to find some of those styles in the US I sew some of my own clothes and love using Burda patterns because of their clean, classic lines
Comment from : Shelly Moon

I'm French Canadian and I have just moved back to my home town after living in dubai for over 13 years People back home have no style 😂 Hahaha! I never realised that but compare to Arabs it's sad to see Barely no time is spent thinking about fashion and most people seem to just wear clothes not to be naked I'm definitely not on the same wave length

Always enjoy your videos Justine French women seem to have such a natural and easy stylish look that accentuates their individual personality I love the red lips In the Midwest, USA, it is very casual here Only a woman wearing a dress catches my attention

Comment from : Matylda Kwiatkowska

Mary Chipman
I live in a small town in the Midwest I haven't noticed much style going on It's not awful, but it's just plain and simple, like our state, Iowa Not a lot of bright colors is one trend I've noticed throughout the Midwest

Scarf: I choose a large or small square I fold it diagonally and use it as a headband, ponytail tie, neck tie, sling (large), shawl, or I can twist it up and snap flies

Style rules? Hmmm…I was born in 1959 and wanted to grow up to wear hats, gloves, brooches, girdles, and stockings like the grown up women I saw as a little girl But in the mid-1960s it all disappeared Now, after the pandemic, I see people going out in pajamas or sweatpants and slippers I will not do it But I know many are fed up with this sloppiness and want to be stylish again The horse races are one place people dress again ( a little), including hats I love this By the way, just found you and I am watching all your videos I am a fashion designer (for me) for decades and I love your viewoint
Comment from : Sara Draper-Wessels

Annalisa Croci
I am italian and live near Milan, which is undoubtedly the fashion industry capital, here you can see an overall obsession for designer clothes, brands and trends in general I feel there is a precise distinction of taste and fashion sense between northern and southern italy What you can see on the average italian, comparing to every woman worldwide, is that we tend to dress up instead of dressing down, we pay lots of attention to accessories and fit, love to pair colours in every season White is seldomly used in winter, such as bright colours, we tend to prefer a good fit which enhances the body shape The average italian woman also pays lots of attention to hair and make up, which are always on point
Comment from : Annalisa Croci

Laura Jean
After twenty years of following my husband across the globe for his international business travel, I have refined my wardrobe in some ways and expanded it in others I agree with all the points discussed Well done

The absolutely glorious and creative ways in which Indian fashion designers mix colours is breathtaking
Comment from : Emma Kray

Cathy Gill
In Australia, the further north (closer to the equator) the more colourful, vibrant, loud especially the closer to the ocean The further south the more muted, edgy

I am Italian and a few rules are different We dress with colour in summer and in dull colours in winter We use similar colours, in different shades - we call it "tono su tono" I love wearing black, brown with cream (not French!), but works well for someone like me with black hair and brown eyes I could not leave the house in joggers too!!!
Comment from : Marina 28

Paula Morris
I'm in the USA and style rules are yoga gearapparentlylol

In California and working in an upscale beach area… I own several nude, strappy heals, they go with everything brIm mixing grey( pants) & nude heels well Classic stiletto heels with a closed toe are really, really out! Makes you look dated & old! ( I know) Except with slim ( NICE) dress jean on a casual day Never ever Birkenstock’s or yoga pants We absolutely mix our silver & gold but must be balanced ( platinum wedding band / diamond) with a gold band in the other hand is ok Love my silver & turquoise lifetime collection, wore alone/balanced Layered gold chains with a charm is really popular 💋

I live in Berlin and the most women are dressed sportive mostly they prefere colours like :black, blue, grey, khaki, beige and white The most of them are wearing sneakers They prefere pants, hot pants and sportive jackets For me they look boring Many of them are not dressed chic, elegant, not fancy or romantic Okay to wear romantic clothes you should be the type of person brFor myself I love romantic style, so I wear mostly dresses and skirts, blouses and floral prints with basics and suitable ascessoirs and shoes And I am sewing often my clothes 🍀🌹😚🌟☺

I am a 69 year old grandmother living in Pennsylvania Finally, I have learned some style principles! Classic styles are the best by far Black, navy, white and beige are the best for me I like to accent with scarves and a piece of jewelry Favorite things include gold or gold tone jewelry and pearls None of these things has to be outrageously expensive I have spent far less money this way brTwo trends I have seen for a number years are body piercings and multicolored hair The hair is silly in my opinion Body piercings look painful and unnatural Part of my career was working in infectious disease I saw so many infections due to body piercings I apologize if I offend anyone It is concerning to me
Comment from : Scout 393

Manjula Adappa
That's my style I naturally intuitively love that style of dressing!
Comment from : Manjula Adappa

Olga Colley
I live in the US (PA) in the rural area Everyday outfits for most women will be yoga pants or sweats Passing the mirror on the way out without looking into it is a very good idea Very long pointy nails with nail art is a must brIn Texas cowboy boots and hats are very popular for both men and women It looks really cool when combined properly with the rest of the outfit
Comment from : Olga Colley

Sandy Depoy
I'm American but both of my Grandmothers are French I identify with French culture as that is what I was raised with I've almost naturally inherited these exact styles she speaks of I love black and blazers, with accent colors In America, nobody has style or taste, and it bothers me so I inherently demand quality and class, so when I go out it bothers me to see people who do not dress properly, or eat garbage food this is all because of my French grandmothers Everyone here thinks I am snooty and stuck up, I just value quality and class
Comment from : Sandy Depoy

Alma Hammond
I'm an American living in the south of France I always pick two colors when I dress but add a third accent color in a scarf, bag, jewelry etc Example: Black and white outfit, bright pink scarf
Comment from : Alma Hammond

Dia Ramer
I live in Indiana On a scientific expedition, a group of us went to a laboratory in the next state over, Ohio As we were all standing around, the doctor stopped speaking and asked if she could ask us all a question Her question? Can you tell me why you are all dressed on black? We all looked around at each other and started to laugh Every one of us were blacked out head to toe I thought it could be the Amish influence Maybe something different??? But here in Indiana, dressing in black, is a norm Especially in Winter

Marti Finan
Very late to the conversation! but I'd love to hear what you think the rules you described tell about your culture! What I mean is, you helped me understand how you make your choices but I'd love to know why you make the choices For instance, why are red lips and nails so tried and true that other colors aren't considered? Why is only one vivid accessory worn at a time? The end result is beautiful, but so are other cultures' end results who don't follow these rules (thinking of beautiful traditional clothing of India, for example) It's all fascinating and I love being educated by you about French style The words that come to mind when I watch your videos are: chic, kind, funny, intuitive, intellectual, accessible, precise, honest, tasteful
Comment from : Marti Finan

Kay Sussex
Agree with everything you say except tan ( not dark brown) boots and handbags look great with otherwise all black outfits And I love jewelry made from both silver and gold Also red lipstick does not suit a lot of people, it makes me look like a vampire
Comment from : Kay Sussex

Josephine Ferguson
I was born and live in Australia, but my heritage is European Australia is a very casual society Australians love sport - and you can certainly see that in the number of people who wear lycra sporting gear when going about their day It breaks my heart! I'm frequently overdressed compared to those around me, but I don't care - to me they are under dressed and I'm merely dressing appropriately!
Comment from : Josephine Ferguson

Cerebral Tombstone
American here: maybe we are an interesting case We are known for being badly-dressed, but plenty of us follow these rules I’m a brave with color (I love green), but follow most of these
Comment from : Cerebral Tombstone

Mama Mack
Wow, all this time I had no idea I was a French woman! 😂
Comment from : Mama Mack

Juanita Hardy
Canada is so multi cultural you see all styles Not too many look "classy" like many French and European women I was raised to buy less and buy quality but today American values have creeped into Canada and young women switched over to cheap, cheerful and way too casual, quantity not quality In the 50s, 60s and 70s there were a lot more "classy" looking women in Canada, especially at work or dining out
Comment from : Juanita Hardy

o0CallOfTheWild0o
Anchorage Alaska fashion is sweatpants, hoodie or plaid flannel, baggy tshirt, giant puffy jacket and Xtratuff rubber boots basically look like you work dockside , are out camping, or like you're homeless dressed up mean switching sweatpants to jeans and wearing a name brand puffy jacket like North Face It is voted the worst dressed city in the US and that is saying something
Comment from : o0CallOfTheWild0o

Ann Smith
Lipstick is very over done and not a complimentary color for her skin tone And the lipstick is a bit smeared which is never a good look, either
Comment from : Ann Smith

Since watching Justine, I ask myself a single question when looking at clothing: "Would a French woman buy this?" br I'm saving an astonishing amount of money

Le Ann La Plante
Hello from the Pacific NW of the US, just wanted to share that I used your dressing suggestions I applied them this morning before heading out Within one hour I received two compliments Thank you Thank you for sharing your experience in a way that makes me feel better not worse
Comment from : Le Ann La Plante

Ania
Sorry but I don't agree with the bs that you need to spend 200 dollars or more on a 'high-quality' white t-shirt I think people need to stop trying to guilt people who can only afford to spend 20 dollars on a t-shirt and instead guilt people who choose to replace said t-shirt every single year instead of just practising good hygiene and washing their clothes properly so that they last for years and even decades
Comment from : Ania

grandjette
It's very nice to hear the version of beauty in one's culture with great respect for the ways in other cultures True enough, French Chic is highly respected across the globe
Comment from : grandjette

Joel
Hi Justine, thanks for all your tips, I really enjoy your videos!brI live in Boston on the East coast of the USA It's a very compact city and people tend to walk and take public transportation a lot, so we like to wear comfortable shoes People generally wear nice sneakers or other shoes that are fashionable but comfortable You will almost never see women in high heels unless they are going out to a club We love jeans, and we tend to wear them with somewhat dressy tops In the winter we have to wear heavy coats, and most people try to get a really nice one So we generally try to be comfortable and wear clothes that are somewhat dressy You rarely see anyone who looks like a super fashionista, although we do follow trends And we do wear makeup, usually in more natural looking colors Red lips and nails would be considered "fancy" here!
Comment from : Joel

Francesca C
I love the French style and that's pretty much the way I usually dress as an Italian woman
Comment from : Francesca C

Gia Temple
What about burberry skirts? They have black and brown?
Comment from : Gia Temple

Ruth Klipp
Thank you, Justine! Love these French rules In the USA, I think there are lots of little "sub-cultures" that each have different rules And there is no shortage of cheap, trendy, disposable clothing I'm following the French (except for my nail polish)!
Comment from : Ruth Klipp

Gay Lee Potere
I'm just wondering about the French and smoking cigarettes I understand that you smoke a great deal Can you comment

I have lived north and south in the US, and Alaska I forgot all sense of fashion during my Alaska years, though I was the girl who always wore lipstick with her polar fleece Now I’m at home in Texas, but my personal style is “home” only to me I live in a semi-rural small city and and have been asked if I’m from California In a sea of same-same clothing and handbags studded with turquoise, I consider that a compliment On a serious note a primary fashion motive is chronic pain, and allergies to leather dyes, etc I am having to be creative to create a spiffy look that agrees with my body — often that is black as a neutral, with lightweight patterned scarves over a comfortable, but well cut knit top I am absolutely loving the observations from women around the world — and as ever, the cheerful wisdom of Justine!

I‘m from Germany and here it is normal to wear your sandals or Birkenstocks with white socks so annoying Or you wear your „Übergangsjacke“ (jacket between seasons) from Jack Wolfskin uuuurg brI guess the Germans are not known for their style maybe it‘s the beer 😅
Comment from : Elena L

R E
Also steel blue or grey blue seems to be popular these last few years I have several garments by different brands in this colour I love it as its not boring blue, its like a muted but interesting looking calming blue I stopped buying and wearing popping colours like red, even though I have olive skin and red fits me nicely I go for light neutrals and this change came to me for a couple of years ago My taste and style have changed completely since I past age 28
Comment from : R E

Comment from : Cassandra Stenner Gospel singer

Camille Spain
I think in the US, following trends is more important/common than fashion rulesbrAlso different styles for different age groups If you’re a teen or young woman, you wouldn’t want to be caught dead in something that looks matronly or too mature Older women also have cuts and styles they’re not “supposed” to wear brNot mixing black and navy is an important one though! As well as wearing closed toed shoes with business attirebrI was also raised not to wear white between Labor Day and Easter But that isn’t too common anymore
Comment from : Camille Spain

PetraMiron
Wow I've just discovered your channel and I love it I'm gonna watch all your videos you're doing a great job! 😍💕
Comment from : PetraMiron

Matylda Kwiatkowska
Polish women are very spontanious, elegant, original etc If you meet women with the same dress at the party is drama😂 They ought also have a new new clothes on the party It is in bed taste to go twice in the same dress Generally the most important is to be oryginal and looks like milion dolar without splendor That why Polish women are the best in wearing clothes 😁They are very pedantic hair, shape of body and smile
Comment from : Matylda Kwiatkowska

Barbara-Louisa Walker
Black is not a colour it's a shade

In Russia they like pavloposadski scarf It comes in a million different styles and there's a million different things you can do with it They make clothes out of it, integrate pieces of scarf into clothing or wear it as a scarf You can also make clutch from it They also like linen dress
Comment from : veronicav27

I'm not French but most of those rules I have followed I do love red lipstick and nails, but I do use other colors (nudes, pinks) I do love hats One thing I do is wear sneakers because I walk a lot If I'm out with friends/date I wear flats but for most days and to run errands I wear sneakers
Comment from : DaxLogan1

Alison

Bon, je dois pas être français alors je change de style comme une girouette, je mélange le noir et le marron et je porte plein de couleurs à la fois parfois 😅

If the french are rockring the effortless chic, swedes are just effortless Like, ”I have all these nice clothes but I dont know what to do with them or what goes with what so I just throw something on and complete with an expensive bag, even though my hair and face looks like I just woke up”brAnd dont forget, flip flops always goes 😄
Comment from : Ka Pe

zhanna kryukova
I am Russian We are absolutely the same as French in our fashion sense and aesthetic taste! Now I live in Toronto, Canada And I am a big exception here in a fashion and harmony meaning Of cause there are some well dressed people here for sure, but there are an army who are dressed in legging, uggs, flip flops, daddy"s T-shirts! I do not blame them or pushing somebody to overdress, but I beg, pls, people, be respectful of your own aesthetic personality
Comment from : zhanna kryukova

Azucena Salgado
I am Spanish, but native French In Spain, I guess It depends the part of the country you live in In the south, they like colours, in Catalunya, they are more classic, I guess It depends also on your way of live I live on the Mediterranean coast and here we cannot wear an Hermés bag without beeing ridículouseasy going is here the rule But fashion has always been important in Spainthe country of Balenciaga, Paco Rabanne, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Manolo Blahnikand Armancio Ortega
Comment from : Azucena Salgado

Saskia Uiterwaal
Netherlands: it’s so stereotypical, but when you wear a great (designer)piece and get a nice compliment, it’s normal to react with “it was on sale”
