I disagree with the statement that leasing is a good idea if you want a new car every 3-4 years with a lower monthly payment and low down payment If you BUY cars and you keep your equity up, your trade is a sufficient down payment Pay higher than the minimum monthly payment and each new car you get you’ll have more and more equity You may have an equivalent payment to a lease but you have equity enough to use as a huge down payment essentially on that new car If you lease, you’ll always have a payment If you’re fine with always having a payment, just BUY every few years and none of the cons really apply

My car meets the 35 rule, and the (slightly modified) 20/5/10 rule I bought a new base model 2020 Honda Accord while interest rates were still low three years ago for 60-month financing through Honda I made a 20 down payment and financed $20,000 I pay about $360 a month When I hear people paying $700 a month or more for cars, I damn near choke If you follow the 35 rule, you won't go in over your head and be in the category of people who are having their cars repo'd because they are in over their head, and buying cars with their eyes rather than their actual financial picture By the way, a base model Accord is still a fantastic car, and incredibly reliable It's nice to feel you've made a smart decision over the next 48 to 60 months rather than feeling like an idiot for 48-60 months Remember that towards the end of that, you will likely be out of warranty and should have some money set aside for surprise repairs If you are already overextended on your payment, that's probably not going to happen very well for you

Save your money, and pay cash for a used car Car payments over a lifetime are costing people a literal fortune Buying a car to keep up the the Jones’s is a fools errand

The other problem with getting a car that you can afford, which is usually a higher mileage, older car if you don't know how much it's gonna cost to fix it, I mean, at least with a newer when you have a warranty and you can save up for things, but if a fuel pump breaks the transmission engine brakes it's on you and that's thousands of dollars

Does it still make sense to get a 36 month car loan rather than paying cash if the stock market has been a flaming tras heap with no end in sight? Like what's the rationale if the return is closer to 5 percent and the car loan is 65 percent

unfortunately the new car model that I’m looking for, is only about 2 or 3 grand more than the used car of the same model (my budget is no more than 34,000 otd) I still drive my 2013 Honda accord, but due to being Stuck in snow multiple times last year (moved from commiefornia to Midwest), I got no choice but to consider looking for another car If my car’s ground clearance is high and awd, I wouldn’t even buy a new car I used my car for a really long time, my longest car was my 1990 Honda accord, with 380,000 miles (when I bought it used, it’s already 170,000miles) before I sold it
