It's not AAA's fault per se, it's how FPS has been done traditionally for a long time, fire bullets from screen, render in another camera view and clip out nothing but the gun so it doesn't disappear when you get close to things, and uses a single raycast for hit detection People making games from scratch these days often do it "realistically", it's not really harder, but more of a design choice ultimately You can't have height over bore without worrying about ballistic and fixed distance zeroes, for some games it's worth it, for some it isn't
