1:20 would that down time when looking at the first 3 shots have effected the poi by the barrel cooling a bit? Comment from : mikeyb byekim |
When zeroing, does the continued use ammo need to be the same as when zeroed, like grain weight and power load? And/or the same brand ammo too? Comment from : mikeyb byekim |
Until they have the fundamental down to shoot a 1 inch group at 25m don’t touch the sights There are so many things that they could be doing wrong that group could have came out of a rifle that is actually zeroed Comment from : Charles McKinley |
From that I suppose that techniques that rely on wind and corolis calculations are next to useless, but when we can't afford the luxury of shooting? Comment from : Silva Dos Santos |
You only need one round to zero Shoot, adjust sights, done Send a second one if you want to confirmbrbrSeriously though, the Army standard is 5 round groups, since 2016 (the new Training Circular) The problem is that so many old timers refuse to accept the new standard, or have no idea that there is a new TC, and that old FM needs to be thrown in the trash Comment from : r k |

I always shoot 5 round groups My Remington/GAPrecision 308 is probably capable of shooting better than me But my shaky old self can just about cover my 5 round 100yd group with a dimeall day long Comment from : Lynn Cotton Dr |
5 shots make more sense Wish the military used that strategy Comment from : Rodney Montague |
Outstanding! Comment from : Quality Guru |
It always puzzled me why the military taught 3 round shots for sight alignment Shooting five rounds makes perfect sense When training new shooters, I always made them load 4 mags with five rounds in each I advised them to shoot the mag dry with out peeping at the target after each shot This usually gave a better shot group that was much easier to adjust in less time Comment from : Clark Abrpi |
Always extremely helpful Comment from : Michael Carter |
Personally, I built a 22lr upper I put the utg irons on it What I like to do is let fellows put that on their lower and see what their groups look like IMO it's way more important to have good shooting techniques ie breathing, trigger control, good ergonomics before you zero a gun BTW I'm more of a hunter than a tactical shooter but probably not a bad idea to be proficient at both Comment from : John Stacy |
I would like to see technics on reloading rifle and/or handgun in different positions Military training, laying prone, we got taught to roll to your side (that was some years ago Not sure it it's still taught) In my current line of work, I've never seen anyone reload that way unless they were military You can see the person awkwardly trying to reload, in prone, if it's not something they are used to doing already Also thanks for the content It's greatly needed in these tough times Comment from : aharris87 |
Used to be an instructor at the BZOrange used only 3 shots Comment from : STRAIT JACKET |
Might not believe this but the Army has atleast changed to 5 round groups Comment from : Jarrod Maxwell |
The more data, the better If you have the time and the patience to shoot a round or two, let the barrel cool a bit, shoot a couple three, cool a bit, and repeat- I would say to go ahead and shoot 10, 20, whole magazine, whatever I'd rather zero to the chunk of missing target and KNOW that the vast majority of my shots go there than to have to hoodoo voodoo "which of these are fliers?"brbrEstablish a GOOD zero Also know what your barrel does when it gets nice and toasty If the zero holds but groups open up, you should know that Most importantly if you get a couple of inches shift, know which direction and the magnitude That is the difference in hitting a target or not once a little bit of range and heat enters the equation A simple "favor left and hold low I've been through a few magazines" could be life saving Comment from : Matt Fleming |
Thank you sir I got three new rifles that need zeroed so this came out at a good time brWhen you zero an ak, do you have that fancy little tool or do you just use a spent shell casing for the front post? Comment from : RockyMountainWest |

Man I just wanna mag dump🥲😭 Comment from : CB -Life Broker |
This is obviously a math problem Anyone want to bet on whether this happens to be the best method of zeroing with fewest shots? Comment from : m falcy |
Yeah, if a shooter can hold a dime (or even a nickle) group at 25m, three rounds is fine But that's not the guy who generally needs coaching to get his rifle dialed in brbrWhich is why it's asinine for the Army to use 3 round groups in BRM - the kid in BRM probably isn't holding a dime at 25, and he's the guy who needs the most help Comment from : geodkyt |
Yep he is correctbrKeepemcoming Comment from : David Findley |

Great video off to the range this weekend to confirm zero Comment from : Manny M |
What the fuck, if that is your shot group you suck Btw, the new ARMY standard is 5 shots I'm afraid, most will be wasting 2 more rounds My 3 rounds are usually touching or at least in the size of a quarter (yes I'm old and don't shoot often) but I digress If my shot group looked like this or one of my trainees they need to go back to the fundamentals of brm A lot of this can be done without firing a shot Comment from : Michael Sparks |
With 2021 ammo prices I zero with no ammo! Comment from : P Clodius |
You can zero any optical sight with 2 bullets and a benchthe rest is up to you Comment from : Lyle Clark |
25m for 300m zero is good👍, I’ve used 36yard for a 250yd zero here lately, and I’m liking the results a lot And the 5 round groups puts the seal on things Unless you’ve got a machine vise for a cheek well, you going to move a little, and we all know how important “Cheek well hold” is And I as taught by some of best on Paris Island, my whole training series qualified first time threw ( Series 3036, grad 9May1977), my platoon 3037, had the top 3 qualifiers Back in the day of good olé Iron SightsbrGod Speed, and God Bless the USA 🇺🇸,,,,,,,brSemper Fi,,, Comment from : KeloRomeoDelta |

It's also possible to jerk 5 shots, why not shoot a 10 round group and be really sure Big army does it to save ammo and not take forever and a day Makes sense that the more specialized a unit is the more precise they would want their zero Comment from : Cory Carlson |
Thanks Karl! Much appreciated I don’t like wasting ammo unintentionally! Lol Comment from : Mr FNH |
I was hoping to see the adjustment and another five shot followup group to see how well it worked Comment from : Tommy TwoGun |

With good sights you can zero in 3, I’ve always liked to shoot groups of 5 checking/testing accuracy With enough rounds down the tube you can usually call a pulled release before you even check the target… Why 5? I’d suppose because a box of 20 lets me run 4 groups each time Comment from : Waggtech |
Great quick shooting tip! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!!🤜🤛🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Comment from : American Patriot |

I prefer to shoot 6 round groups for zeroing, but was always taught that zeroing should be done with 3 to 12 rounds-- I just zeroed a brand new FAL in 12 rounds (2 groups) just the other day Great stuff right here brother, on point Comment from : DJ The Metalhead Mercenary |
