This is such an incredibly exciting and innovative use for AI within the healthcare system As nursing shortages continue, this has some great potential utility to help nursing staff handle large volumes of patients without being overworked and overwhelmed I did, however, appreciate that the staff at this hospital understood there were shortcomings to this AI technology, and did not see AI replacing healthcare staff all together I agree with this mindset, as AI could potentially help benefit many patients, but I do believe there are ethical concerns with the rapid growth of AI and its use in healthcare, specifically with how it would be able to personalize care to each situation brIn the book Resolving Ethical Dilemmas: A Guide for Clinicians, an important ethical concern with AI in healthcare is presented: “Different stakeholders may prioritize different outcomes or goals for AI algorithms in addition to biomedical outcomes” Corporations may have their own priorities for what a good patient outcome is regarding finances and efficiency, physicians may have their own ideal of a good outcome is based on the quality and efficacy of care, and patients also have their own views of what their best outcome would be Furthermore, each patient is different: some might not want intensive care, some might want to exhaust every possible resource, and even much more nuanced preferences like which medications have side effects that would be most tolerable to their lifestyle It would be impossible for an AI technology to be able to know the personal and unique situation of each patient and to be able to prioritize the many factors that go into getting that patient the best outcome for that situation As such, it is my belief that AI would be best used as a “helping hand” to healthcare staff rather than a replacement for the very personal, intimate, and emotional patient-centered care that patients are able to get from real life interaction with healthcare staff
