My gramps taught me to do this years ago only using white vinegar If you use household which is 5, the files need to soak for up to a week, depending on how bad they are Although this does take substantially longer, it is much safer and less expensive than using sulfuric acid You can also use industrial vinegar or acetic acid but it is much more expensive and a lot stronger at 30 and requires the same saftey precautions as sulfuric acid I have also used muriatic acid and it works just fine Just keep the dilution to 10 to 1 or ten to 15 water/acid and keep an eye on progress so as not to let it go too far and ruin the files Keeping files all piled together is a sure way to dull tgem quickly Store them separately in a rack or make covers for them to protect the teeth Comment from : Gator357 |

My papaw used to put gas in a cup and put the files in em always told me it was pee because it was all yellow and smelled like varnish he drank a lot said thats what happens if you drink too much lol Good way to keep little hands off your files also Comment from : Z-Ack |

Very informative While I believe this will restore old dirty rusty files, I don't believe it actually sharpens the file I am going to test this theory on a badly work filter that I have Dirty files don't cut and keeping them clean will keep them cutting better longer Comment from : Greg Brown |
