Just saw a comment on here, NOT to use worm castings for houseplants I'm not growing vegetables, I'm growing foliage plants, flowers, and tropicals Most of them come indoors for the winter (Chicago- it's a long winter) If the worm castings are commercial, there won't be any worm eggs in there, will there? Is that what you want to avoid? Thanks Comment from : Linnea Lahlum |
|
Do u ever mix the pine bark/shredded hardwood in the actual potting mix? I'm finding I like it a lot mixed in the soil itself too I add a little extra lime if the plants don't appreciate the extra acidity but Im finding the moisture is better balanced when using pine bark with the peat moss in a mix I'm in the Pacific Northwest on the Oregon coast and it gets very wetbr I started heaven facing peppers too this year I make my own Chinese Chili Oil Comment from : Jenny Simon |

Hi Gary!brbrAll your videos are very informative and you have a good way of teaching, so thank you for that!brbrI've been growing veggied in containers quite a bit because I've been in the process of getting established at a new home and haven't haven't had a space dedicated yet for a garden I've used mostly 15 gallons so I think I've really been using an oversized container requiring more soil and amendments!brbrI want to try the soilest mix Will that work OK for a crop of tubers like potatoes or will that hold too much moisture?brbrThanks again! Good morning Gary,brI have 4 raised beds that were built within the past year 3 of the beds have a potting mix and 1 has a mix of potting soil, sand, coco core, and pearlite I have a variety of vegetables growing now All of them are alive but failing to thrive I am trying to figure out why my plants are not growing They all have the same type of symptoms; few leaves, thick leaves, curling, light green in color I was using an organic fertilizer with the recommended ratio on the bag According to the directions I only fertilize 1 time every 2 months I water all my plants at the soil level when my moisture tester measures just above the red line I use a straw mulch on all the beds So you have any suggestions as to why my garden is failing to thrive?brI would like to feed my established plants in the raised beds the worm castings Can you tell me if I should use the liquid or solid casting, how often to feed, and amounts Thank you so so much for your detailed videos I love learning from your videos Comment from : Living In Today |

Gary,, Not sure the size of your brick , but it looks sizable , I usually get the 11 lb brick and it takes 8-9 gal of water totally saturate the coir which I happen to like, but I also like to add some course vermiculite to mine I did catch what organic mix even though it may not be needed I also raise my own castings and make my own tea I did a worm casting test once before but cannot find that test but it really shows the difference , one of the main difference was large sizable leaves On my test I used 1/4 of the mix, but less could be used Comment from : morris wright |

I am just starting to use grow bags in the Arizona desert in my third attempt to have a vegetable garden in the desert Low rainfall, hot days and poor soil forced me to abandon a stationary garden in the ground Five gallon plastic jugs in wagons for movement was my next attempt The plant spacing and root ball limited by the plastic container created a lot of disease problems My latest attempt is a "raised bed" of5,10 & 20 gallon growbags on a repurposed commercial grade wood picnic table w/plank seats More spacing between containers for disease control, drip irrigation for the lack of rain, breathable containers to "burn off" roots from spiraling around and a shadecloth/PVC canopy for sun control I am using moisture control potting soil from a Big name because the grow bags dry out quickly Do you have any experience with growbags and suggestions for vegetable gardening in the desert? Comment from : Bruce Vivers |
