Calm down people For a start it was never intended for both carriers to be at sea togetherbrOne at sea and one in for maintenance and the crews/aircraft would all swap overbrThey are not the large US carriers with multi air groups basically they are larger versions of the Illustrious class and the potential is there to retrofit catapults etc and also an angled deck It wouldn't mean taking one out of service as one would already be in maintenancebrIf we needed 2 at sea we would actually need a third carrier to keep that continuousbrAt the time of them being built EMALS were still experimental They are diesel /electric powered so cannot produce steambrThe article talks about unmanned aircraft so a full size system may not be requiredbrAs for aircraft we are stuck with the F35c until all this happens(if it does) It wasn't that long ago that one took off with the ship tied up in dock which is something the large US carriers couldn't do so they are versatilebrI worry when we could buy catapults/emals off the shelf and they mention there is a British design being developedbrHow many times does that translate to late delivery/failures/cost overun?? Just buy them from the USbrFinally now that we have large decks to operate from I cannot understand why they have not looked at small STOL aircraft for COD and AEW duties as they seem reluctant to get the Osprey Back in the day the US landed a c130 Hercules on a carrier and took off again without any cats/traps brI know it's old but something modern along the lines of the Short skyvan with modular pallets/pods Helicopters are expensive aircraft to have flying for long periods on AEWbrAnd yes I have been on the last of the large UK carriers with cats/trapsbrThe carrier itself is not a fighting vessel the air wing does that In theory any largish ship / hull could be retrofitted with a flat deck and F35C operate from it (as they did in the war)brYes all ships are vulnerable to missiles regardlessbrIt's all down to politicians changing their minds and world events We no longer have large overseas bases but events somtime still require the UK to have a presence so we have floating airfields Who knows what the future needs would be but remember what I said about politicians lolbrFor those who moan about cost find a pie chart of UK govt expenditure and compare defence with social services and education You might just be surprised

Chicken Nugget
My understanding was that the UK carriers were not equiped with steam catapults because it was old technology They were instead built to accomodate a future upgrade EMALS
Comment from : Chicken Nugget

Clone #57
Meanwhile the british army has become a 2nd rate force
Comment from : Clone #57

Ethereal Bolweevil
Osprey - because of the potential for air-air refuelling of both rotorcraft and fixed wing aircraft flying from CVF
Comment from : Ethereal Bolweevil

Don Park
Should have been catch and trap from square one!!!
Comment from : Don Park

1701:TheFyldeFlyer
PoW is in dry dock having its twin prop shafts repairs amongst other things It's also being used to supply parts for QE so I doubt both carriers will be retro fitted
Comment from : 1701:TheFyldeFlyer

drandrewallan
Should have had them in first place!
Comment from : drandrewallan

Brian Swan
They’re thinking of reintroducing the Fairey Gannet
Comment from : Brian Swan

Neil Titmus
I really don't understand out UK aircraft carriers mad not to have catapults and an off set deck
Comment from : Neil Titmus

Beach Boy
Drones changes everything brSo a ship now can have over 200 aircraft manned and unmanned
Comment from : Beach Boy

marc biff
Whilst they are there the ship builders could chop off the ugliest bows in the world and maybe fit better looking ones
Comment from : marc biff

ce183
Common sense prevails, the situation in Europe is making every nation look back on pennypinching and defence cuts, the future of the Royal Navy looking good, FMAF and type 83 destroyer vision will be interesting
Comment from : ce183

Ian McConnell
Don't they mean the UK's "one" supercarrier? Last I heard, one was in dry dock (Prince of Wales) being cannibalised to keep the other operational 🤣
Comment from : Ian McConnell

The British Engineer
Of for Christ sake, the guv'ment screws up again So they work out the Yak-141 knock-off the 35-b for beta (Lockheed bought all the design material and 2 air frames from bankrupt Yak) is too maintenance heavy, not stealth and a flying baby seal that neither has the range or ceiling Britain already has an airframe for these carriers, the BAE autonomous Taranis supersonic drone that first flew in 2013
Comment from : The British Engineer

columbus
How very prescient to omit it, put it in, omit it
Comment from : columbus

jakatta
It should have had them installed at the start Rather than format the carriers to fly only one design of plane Which is even the worst variant, heavier so can't carry as much ordinance, expensive, slower and expensive to maintain The decision was so shirt sighted, but typical of the Tory government
Comment from : jakatta

Clive Frear
Usually obsolescence is built in after a product has been in service for a useful period of time, not before! Good job nobody’s accountable! And after all, it’s only the hard-working tax payers’ money
Comment from : Clive Frear

Jason Smith
This is complete fiction and the Royal Navy are NOT considering fitting catapults to the QE class carriers They have made up this story purely to gain thousands of views which makes them money! Channels like this should be taken down Project Ark Royal - seriously? What a load of shit
Comment from : Jason Smith

Tom Riley
So as the NAO said years ago it made no sense not to build the CVF without CATOBAR but I'll believe this when I see it The Carriers were originally designed for this to be an option - "Originaly" but no design work was done on it since about 2000, BAe just left it on the website They tried doing this prior to bringing them into service but it was going to cost about £600million, additionally they've now bought STOVL F35s Putting cats and wires on them now just takes the MOD procurement mess one step further - we'd have carriers with CATOBAR capability but extremely expensive aircraft that couldn't use it similarly we'd have an AEW radar based on a helicopter system from the 1980s rather than a catobar one that would give much more useful capability To be honest I'm more worried about the radar than the aircraft - STOVL F35 will still be nasty but lack of a decent radar could lead to the carrier being vulnerable
Comment from : Tom Riley

Ian Richards
Very sad when your flagship gets compared to the Russian Admiral Kuznetsov These boats are 1970s technology… non-Nuclear, non-CAT, non-TRAP, non-AWACS, limited range diesel burning POS with that ridiculously emasculated banana-ramp… pathetic indeed…
Comment from : Ian Richards

Jesus Christ
Might as well as they have no aircraft on them Tory geniuses
Comment from : Jesus Christ

David Peters
Boom & Bust Brown ordered them no wonder they will cost twice what he expected
Comment from : David Peters

phil stabler
It was designed with this in the build, it is all there
Comment from : phil stabler

Van To
Don't forget to increased the SUPERGLUE order!
Comment from : Van To

Neil Perry
No, it wasn’t the naval ship design, but a money limit set o; the og build of the carriers by the ‘labour’ government, and UAV’s were not present fully for naval service We’ve only seen the rise of UAV’s in the last 5 years, and the increase of superior performance from the UAV’s due to the last 2 years of the Ukrainian / Warrior
Comment from : Neil Perry

Tim Clark
Good to see all the positive comments on here from my fellow BritsbrSorry miserable, moaning fellow Brits 🤣
Comment from : Tim Clark

robert pullen
We only have one carrier The other one is being used for spare parts
Comment from : robert pullen

RICHARD PEACHEY
I'm not sure a catapult system is required as China does not use that system on their carriers but we do require a recovery system , I also believe British ingenuity will solve this problem
Comment from : RICHARD PEACHEY

Simon Bird
This is fake news!
Comment from : Simon Bird

Claude Bylion
Proof that the so-called experts responsible for our navy designs are at a serious loss of common sense Any average person could have told them that these carriers required cats and traps so that allies aircraft could be launched and recovered
Comment from : Claude Bylion

Martin Powell
I doubt this completely the cosy would be totally prohibitive
Comment from : Martin Powell

John Birch
About 8100DY time, Cats & Traps should have been instaled on build
Comment from : John Birch

David Oldboy54
Retro fitting costs much more than if originally fitted and puts them out of service for a long time, stupid waste of taxpayers money yet again, but no doubt they are a benefit, pity the foresight was missing during construction
Comment from : David Oldboy54

Chadimir Poutine
Never fix the top before you have a valid shaft The quality of British carriers makes me doubt they were a marine power for a lot of its history
Comment from : Chadimir Poutine

Martin Saunders
So are they also going to be fitted with angled flight decks?
Comment from : Martin Saunders

Gurgle Jug
Hahaha trying to retrofit on huge carriers? Jokers

Comment from : piglex1

Backwardlooking
The omission demonstrates the uselessness of our MOD
Comment from : Backwardlooking

Gregory Thoman
Not possible to retrofit a carrier for a launch and recovery system
Comment from : Gregory Thoman

Robert Cooper
Britain were irresponsible never to consider launch and recovery for use of other aircraft carrier aircraft other than VSTOL Americans are not idiots when it comes to carriers to ensure the maximum use of all aircraft carrier born planes Anyway, now’s the time to modify the carriers as the world is in one hell of a mess and it’s inevitable that a military conflict is evident in the very near future
Comment from : Robert Cooper

Mr Coutts
Could catch them on return with a big net that rotates the energy out with a energy recovery system to slow it down safely Possibly multiple nets on a revolver 😊 nice
Comment from : Mr Coutts

richard murphy
hold the war chinaman got to sort me traps wtf the thing is a joke and the f35 has one engine ffs
Comment from : richard murphy

Drawn In
Great, was always going to be the possible first upgrade
Comment from : Drawn In

Mirek Šlechta
All aircraft carriers became defenceless sitting ducks thanks to Russias hypersonic missilles USA´s army was changed into second rate military until USA would solve how to defend against Russia´s most modern misssilles That is reality regardless of NATO propaganda
Comment from : Mirek Šlechta

Nick Walters
They were originally designed for cats and traps, or CATOBAR as our US cousins call them Cancelled mid development to save money, but the structural info structure is there in he original build A major upgrade, but not a show stopper
Comment from : Nick Walters

Gups
Pretty sure the US would have a fit over this As close as we are getting to a serious war with Russia and/or China can't really afford for the length of time this would take A new class of carrier would be wiser
Comment from : Gups

Utoob
As-built, without catapults and arresting wires, these ships are white elephants The Royal Navy really drank the F-35 Kool-Aid - the F-35B is the only fixed-wing aircraft that they can operate, and it has a short range and small payload With catapults, they could operate F-35Cs, F-18s, tankers, and E-2s - in other words, a proper air wing I hope this story is true ( I doubt it ) otherwise these ships should be sold or scrapped Kudos to Britain for trying, anyway
Comment from : Utoob

verdebusterAP
Interesting development
Comment from : verdebusterAP

Jammie Dodger
It is possible that Taranis may have the capability to operate off Aircraft carriers
Comment from : Jammie Dodger

Bremners Ghost
Personally I expect that rather than Retrofit these to the QE & POW, The RN will build a new Class called the King Charles
Comment from : Bremners Ghost

Gary Strittmater
Due the very nature of ship design, I wonder if more than one launch system can be installed without severe ship modification! Either steam or EMALS need massive amounts of power and the ship power plants WERE NOT DESIGNED for this capacity! The ship remods will be extensive and take them out of action for months, if not years
Comment from : Gary Strittmater
