3:46 Make the world happy at first glance but darker the deeper you look Comment from : @i_have_no_braincells4742 |
for me, the story will have to fit my world for im really worldbuilding for the sake of worldbuilding, not to tell a story i want to write merely to share the world so the themes for plot will be drawn from the world Comment from : @Zero-4793 |
Listening to a bunch of your videos rn because theyre geninuely helpful even if Ive heard a lot before its always helpful to get it explained differently again, one thing I apprichate is how youre able to weave in your ads for your buisness andbbooks without being annoying even after 5 videos in a row ^^ great videos Comment from : @leyangel7059 |
Deeply disagree with the point about contemporary dialogue Out perception of old ways of speaking is heavily skewed Common slang is what was used in the past, and contemporary generally common slang is a better "translation" of how people actually talked Comment from : @edwinleskin3112 |
6:48 hey buddy Speak for yourself 😐😂 Comment from : @McCreightMB |
Aw, my dragons aren't necessary Comment from : @Di-Sapien |
The thing is that I am sacred to publish my work work even though it will be good and everything is masterfully done I have started to developing the story the world, characters and everything The reason is why I am scared that My novel would not be recognised and will be a flop And I can't write any other novel because I would have already used all my elements in my first novel Whenever I have this thought I feel like why am I putting so much effort in writing a novel Comment from : @adarshgangwar2285 |
Honestly, I find works focusing on lies and subterfuge like you describe can work even better in bright, cheerful, innocent appearing environments Now, even the setting itself is a carefully held pretense and deception, an instance and example of the themes themselves, instead of a blunt representation of the subtext Comment from : @zaphyrusm8940 |
I was recently reading a medieval vampire fantasy and the main character referenced a 'teddy bear' It threw me out because the 'teddy' in teddy bear comes from Theodore Roosevelt So I was imagining a president Roosevelt slashing vampires on horseback Comment from : @dianemiles2720 |
Don't forget that Tolkien was a professor and even been in one of the world wars So he had tons of knowledge and experience that most novice writers lack Comment from : @DoomWalker42 |
Great video Thank you for this Comment from : @blackmanadventures3211 |
Can sameone tell me how to make wizard not weak or not extra strong Comment from : @user-dv7ur3kc7i |
What are you talking about I AM trying to be tolkien here and I WILL worldbuild for 20 years first Comment from : @InnocenceVVX |
The dragon prince already did the first mistake, even though the producers are experienced writers lol, the two main characters who are borthers and princes are literal pov characters who do not feel like they are actual royalty of a militaristic kingdom in odds with powerful magical beings beyond the vulcanic border Comment from : @ManiyaVinas |
I am trying to work on my first story now Emphasis on trying because I have tried several times before only to crash and burn, which I think happened because of mistakes such as world building and overwhelming myself with trying to do too much For my current story I have kept it simple Even though this story takes place on a fictional world, it is 'Earth-like' with the same kind of rules, boundaries, and laws of physics I also kept it confined to a city The reader will know that there are other cities, lands, and nations, but the entirety of the story is told in first person view of the protagonist and within the city she is inbrbrIt's comforting to know when watching a lot of these 'avoid these mistakes' types of videos that I am already doing it simply using the knowledge I've obtained over the years since my last attempt I really hope I can see this one to the end Comment from : @ulibarriL |
8:50 I strongly agree It's better to have a lot to say about one thing, religion for example, than to say too little about everything Comment from : @AN-jz3kf |
I’m trying to give my potential readers only what they need for a world building background and IF they want a deeper intake into it, there will be an appendix at the end cover each nation in more detail brbrI LOVE Jordan and JRR BUT find they give too much at times when they could have put it in the appendix for us Comment from : @atheistapostate7019 |
GRRM convinced every aspiring fantasy writer that you must first establish an encyclopedia for your world, but always remember, you need to write your story first for there to even be an encyclopedia 😂 Comment from : @chillguy9971 |
my first thought about your spires book was not about food or materials but 'how do the planes take off and land???' XD Comment from : @adamantawhitfoot2353 |
Okay, now I am working on a way to brew a story using my interest in medieval warfare, wildlife (mainly birds and plants), psychology, and folklore around fairies and other small creatures We'll see how that turns out! Comment from : @hungariangiraffe6361 |
While I agree with spirit of the first point if you're writing a story, I disagree with it as a general point, because sometimes people just want to worldbuild for worldbuilding's own sake, and that's ok Comment from : @brunopereira6789 |
Just an idea but for the spires have hanging gardens and let the lack of food take a big part in it like maybe parents have to chose to sacrifice their children to the mist below or there are governments forced eugenics programs this would allow for stronger faster people in general but also an inherent burtal horror inside the world that you could explore Comment from : @jaymespond3867 |
I played a lot of JRPGs growing up and that basically inured me to anachronistic dialog in fantasy settings "Jarringly modern" was usually a better alternative to "garbled mistranslated mess" Comment from : @JohnSmith-uk6wh |
And about those monsters down in the mist- what ecosystem supports them? As someone with an ecology background, few things are more annoying to me than a fantasy or sci fi world with huge, dangerous keystone predators- and no ecosystem to support them How much are those monsters breally/b out to get people - and how much of the ‘scary monsters down there’ is propaganda to keep people from going down there? Comment from : @hilarymajor3983 |
The other thing about your city spire world, fungi, mushrooms, and mycology in general- that would be another important protein source, organic material recycling, and can be used for leather and a solid structure material There are companies now using fungi for an alternative to plastic, leather, and styrofoam For fabric, your spires don’t have space for cattle for hides or cotton or linen, so silk worms, fungal leather, would be important Vertical horticulture would be everything, vines, terraces There could be wet terrace farms for a plant like papyrus for material use Hemp Peanuts can grow a large yield of nuts in a relatively small space Hydroponics, plants growing over fish tanks These plants would be very intensely cultivated, well past whatever form they had in nature Different spires probably have different hybrids and cultivation, so what specific food a person is familiar with would be an important part of identifying which one they came from, and what social class or guild It’s easier to grow a pot of herbs in a tight space than a wide vegetable garden, so seasoning and flavors of basic carbohydrates can be very extensive City trees can be part of an edible landscape with fruits and nuts If one of your pirates wants to do botanical sabotage, look up what happened with the American Chestnut in Appalachia Comment from : @hilarymajor3983 |
About your world with all the spires- greenhouses There can be entire guilds or groups of people who specialize in producing food via greenhouses I work in one, let me know if you want some suggestions But a part of that world could be that every household and businesses has some space dedicated to growing food, and recycling organic materials for compost Meat and protein can come from small animals, insects, Guinea pigs, some form of rodent that grows well in a small space, or a version of chickens Cereal crops take land, so tubers like potatoes would make a good carbohydrate base Greenhouses always have to deal with pests, mold, and plant diseases, so introducing a plant disease could be a death sentence- think Ireland and potatoes Anything with cereal base, like wheat or other seed harvested crops, would be a luxury, and a status symbol Plumbing and hydrology is probably incredibly sophisticated Comment from : @hilarymajor3983 |
Holy crap that Anachronistic Dialogue section is awfulbrIt's fantasy You can't have it without at least some anachronismsunless you WANT to write about people having to wipe their shit with their hands And that's just the tip of the nasty icebergbrAlso, that whole "the concept of minutes and hours didn't show up until the industrial revolution" just tells me this guy has either never been in a history class in his life, or never passed one Comment from : @mattpace1026 |
I struggle with trying to avoid info dumping I really like worldbuilding, so I have this whole world made with all kinds of civilizations, technology, magic systems, species, etc, and I have to resist the urge to tell all that to the reader when I'm writing a book set in my universe Although, I'm not really trying to become a professional writer, I just decided that I might as well write some stories set in the massive universe I created Comment from : @necromancer1436 |
15:30 what's your sources on this? People had no concept of hours before industrialisation really mate? 😂 You know the first sun dials trace all the way back to like 1500BC Comment from : @supermeuhmeuh |
Good thing my original would is a triple barrel shotgun Clear, confined, and ultimately only able to function for a one-off… save prequels, but readers can fill out those details They’re inconsequential to the revenge of Valdis Comment from : @user-cd7qf3ed8r |
Great video, but if you're just going to summarize Brandon Sanderson's lecture on worldbuilding that he posted a few years ago, just say that All of the examples are the same, down to the unpublished novel named Masks of Steel about dogfighting between rocky spires in a sea of mist Comment from : @tquarrie828 |
On point 3, I think it's worth noting that there's no harm in having reams of info prepared to cover all parts the world building, if that's what works for you as a writer brbrThe crucial part is holding that info in your head, to inform your writing, but knowing which bits of info your audience needs to know, and which they don't brbrFor instance, as part of establishing technological level you could work out what cooking methods are used in the houses of your world They're never delved into and explained, but they are lightly touched on as the only food presented is what could be prepared in those facilities This (if you'll pardon the pun) gives the audience the flavour without miring them in detail Comment from : @Picklescape |
I always feel like I don't know enough to build a believable world I don't know enough about chemistry, politics, geography, and so on It feels so daunting when I think about all of the things I need to know even when making things up Especially if I want it to be believable How do you get around that? Comment from : @noelogden1625 |
Well I would argue when it comes to time, depending on the setting there could be a sundial That goes back as far as 1500 BC so that is something that could be used in a fantasy book to tell time In Avatar the Last Airbender they found what was essentially a massive calendar to find out when the next solar eclipse was Comment from : @CosmicDuskWolf |
Roof gardens are great for providing food ;-) Comment from : @tiffanylamb1187 |
Love from a Vaush and Daniel Green fan! Comment from : @VooshSpokesman |
My whole story started of with me playing with my characters and my world, originally these were just characters i liked to imagine and put in different scenarios as a sort of passtime, and as i built their world, i got an idea for conflict, I've just written something of a first chapter for it yesterday, i haven't written anything in 5 years, and this whole story started with me playing imaginary dolls with my characters two years ago Comment from : @Crisasin_Crisis |
To paraphrase Stephen King and a lot of others, what you imply draws people in a lot more than what you say, because you trigger their imagination to fill in the blanksbrYou have to give enough for readers to latch on, not spoon feed thembrLearning about your universe should be a consequence of your story unfolding, not a prerequisite to it Comment from : @boxonothing4087 |
I personally do have world builder's disease and one advice I can give on how to "overcome" it is to embrace it for a while and really ask yourself "Do I actually desire to write a story or do I maybe just enjoy the flow of creativity and the sense of escapism world building gives me?" brBecause there's nothing wrong with just being a world builder if that's your hobby No one ever said you have to write a book for your world building to be amazing and valid brFor me, by just dropping all pressure and giving myself the permission to world build and write a wiki for as long as I wanted, I eventually realised that there WAS an interesting plot that simply had to be told, one that naturally grew out of my world building because it functioned as one of the core problems of the society at the center of my world brThis will also help you completely circumvent the problem of your plot and world being disconnected brNow I am more motivated than ever to write my book because I have such an all-encompassing understanding of what the stakes are AND I already have an extensive wiki to base my writing off of And sometimes, I still feel like world building instead of writing for a week or two so I take a break from writing and indulge in this other hobby without feeling bad for itbrAs long as you're not on some sort of timer, this works pretty well I think Comment from : @lks_mobile |
so not a writer in a traditional sense but ive been building a campaign for d&d ive shared this with other DMs to help them fill the checklist of avoiding these mistakes Comment from : @andrewbriggs2692 |
Oooh a Choice of Games author? 👀😊 Comment from : @b2bsilliness468 |
I usually try to have the story create the world Comment from : @danbrooks4270 |
im literally building a world filled with fungal mushroom magic stuff lmao this is so on point Comment from : @cinderbones |
I think going big on world building suits best for video games like DnD or The Elder Scrolls For books and films there's just so much you can write up to not make it feel congested Comment from : @ironiccookies2320 |
You've found something valuable A related book could deepen your understanding if you're into this "Stars Aligned" by Olivia Whitestone Comment from : @bitsbard |
Interesting stuff If this topic grabs you, I'd recommend a similar book "Stars Aligned" by Olivia Whitestone Comment from : @StarsTogether |
I wonder if the problem of starting too big is because originally they want to have elements they might potentially use later along with minimizing any possible conflicts and contradictions But in the end, they can't help but to wanna use all of it in one go 🤔 Comment from : @KuDastardly |
You have made some really good points! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!!! Comment from : @afternoonbears6989 |
Pretty much contradicted yourself on that language part Thinking about each phrase your characters use in a historical context is a huge time sink at best and will actually detract from your audiences investment at worst A couple well spaced out terms unique to your setting should be enough but overdoing it will detract from the remainder of the work with the exception of a small minority of readers that will love it, or poke holes in it Like you said, there’s a lot of words and phrases we use and don’t notice, neither does the audience and I’d rather have them thinking about the character’s conflicts and fate than the implications of the use ,or lack there of, of “minutes” in a preindustrial setting Comment from : @kyuutakitsune7163 |
Jed: “don’t start your world too big”brbrMe: “too late” Comment from : @chesterjabieski4003 |
Love the food question! I’m always wondering about that whether irl or enjoying a good book/movie, or world building Comment from : @clarysagequartz9535 |
considering the last suggestion about your professional knowledge, computer science might be the most useless major a medieval wroter can have that's me Comment from : @adaliu3795 |
Honestly the best advice I’ve found for writing a novel is there is no black and white way to write Each individual is different and they write in a way that works for them Any writer who says you MUST write how he or she tells you to is potentially a lucky author though however you wish to define success, but they aren’t good teachers Comment from : @JDGage |
About the dialogue, it really bugs me when people say "okay" in epic fantasy it just feels so wrong Comment from : @saskewoo |
I decided to lean into worldbuilders disease and make settings for trrpgs XD brWorking on my post Ragnarok world right now 😂 Comment from : @garrettwhite3922 |
I recently started writing my first novel Though I am uploading it as a web novel on royal road I do not think I am making any of these mistakes so far But at least I know some things to look out for Thank you for the advise Comment from : @Luesatora |
I started Worlbuilding my first world a month ago and I am glad I can't say I commited any of these mistakes It seems spending 50 hours preparing for creating it paid off Comment from : @averybadspeedrunner226 |
you seem to like floating things Comment from : @fakkmorradi |
turn your characters blue and make them insufferable progressives always a success make villain a old white guy aint no way that is gonna get boring remove harsh words like "dwarf" and sell product to China we can do this people Comment from : @kongvinter33 |
With world building and the primary kingdom i made The only important figure was the first king while the rest of the rulers are noted to be to weak to be remembered I found that simplified a lot of the history since the world really only notes the powerful Unless they are integral to the story and the dynamics later seen I just moved right past them It also helps that powerful beings live a long time or are functionally immortal so it kept me from having something like wheel of time or LOTR style history Though wheel of time also had a lot of missing history because of information loss such as the empire on the otherside of the sea so I took inspiration from that a bit to lighten my load of world building Comment from : @mattiOTX |
I know this video is old and you may not see this, but concerning your spire civilization, perhaps the food grows on the side of the spires and requires intense physical capability to reach, or grows on the bellies of some sky whale type creatures, therefore the “farmers have a low life expectancy And could be an origin for a character Comment from : @romthale6493 |
To add to your last point:brPeople praise Tolkien for his immensely detailed worldbuilding that is focused on language, poems, histories and mythologies And his admirers naturally try to emulate his greatness by focussing on the same themesbrBut Tolkien didn't just wake up one day and decided that the best way to write a fantasy stories is to focus on these themes He already was a decorated scholar in linguistics, which gave him proficiency in using that to create a believable and alive feeling worldbrMost fantasy writers don't have credentials like Tolkien in these fields But they might have knowledge and wisdom in other fields that they can use in their storybrIT guys could probably focus on creating interesting magic systems, trade workers can go into details regarding the nuts and bolts that keep their world running, animal handlers and veterinarians could craft a story focusing on the wildlife, natural habitats and the usually unexplored details of the biomes the story takes place in Tolkien never focused on any of these things, because he knew what his strengths were, he played to them, and the result was a unique vibe that nobody could emulatebrYou won't get a lord of the rings this way, but you will get something unique that's truly your own, and you won't write with a handicap against the GOATbrSo don't try to make up bs languages and cringe poems when you have no idea about linguistics or poesy, just because Tolkien did Take what you know, extend your knowledge through research and adapt for your story You might end up with something actually unique Comment from : @BigKnecht |
I like big worlds, love the fantasy tropes 😅❤ Comment from : @jorisschelfhout2348 |
dude you are not in a age of giving any types of advice to anyone Comment from : @canotik |
LABOURER 😄😄😄😄 Comment from : @gyanprakashraj4062 |
oceans are already made from lava Comment from : @Sedge2 |
With regards to use of common words like minutes, hours etc a common argument is that the dialogue is 'translated' into modern English we can understand because someone could just as well ask 'why are they speaking English?' Comment from : @bilalkhares1769 |
The farms can come from other cities, like having farming cities which would probably be oppressed by the higher cities, and a main character could come from one of the farming cities that don't live in the spires Comment from : @cemal124 |
Great advice to end up with a dead empty world You should apply for the Writiers Guild Comment from : @bobSeigar |
