This helped so much mine started hissing and was continuously running causing the cistern to overfill and this was only a week after installation! Taking the cap off revealed the issue what had happened was when the valve was installed jointing compound was used to connect the pipe to the isolation valve due to previous issues with leaks What happened was the water flow caused debris from jointing compound to sit under the black rubber seal and also be at the top of the fill valve chamber Once this was cleaned up it was working fine Comment from : a p |

Thank you! Your video helped me fixed my problem Comment from : John1000 |

I am embarrassed to say I have lived with the water hammer for 3 years! I tried flushing the air out of the pipes, I tried a hammer arrester at the toilet but it took a call to the plumber who said $150 per hour to get me to continue to search deeper in to the recesses of the web Well, $14 later and it is fixed by simply replacing the fill valve!!!!!! oh my gosh, I was so afraid my pipes would burst from the water hammer One way I figured out it was the old fill valve was to wiggle it and yes, the water hammer stopped at that instant! Comment from : TravelTrix |
Thanks so much for this video! We had a toilet start hissing today and this fixed the issue! Comment from : Khai Pham |
Thanks for posting this video! Well, we flushed the fill valve and replaced it but the hissing sound is still going on I will try replacing it and see what happens I will mention however, that the water that fills the toilet is warm not cold so that may have affected the valve The warm water is due to a valve we have under the sink that continuously circulates water so we don't have to wait for hot water in the shower - not sure why the toilet water is included Comment from : Lourdes Knight |

Fluidmaster, you guys are the best!brUnfortunately, it did not occur to me to look for a video until I was browsing the fluidmaster site after this 400A valve was replaced like for like brNever afraid to put my hands in a cistern (even in holiday units!) I had searched the valve for the solution to our new overflow issue We have rented this house for8 years, and the toilet was well and truly old when we moved in Even the trade store didn't recognise the worn logo I photographed on a previous repair (the rubber seal from the cistern drainpipe into the ceramic inlet of the loo- I don't remember what it's called, I'm clearly not a real plumber!)brThis toilet ALWAYS filled super slowly and I just figured it was supposed to be like that, worked perfectly otherwise, and totally silent -I was aware that there had been long term illness for the previous owner, so figured it was deliberate brBut the very slow overflow required attention I carefully watched as the valve refilled, trying to locate the issue but basically no matter how high I raised the float and its lever, the pin didn't stop the intake I carefully, gently but firmly, twisted, rotated and adjusted every section I could identify as separate, I had taken the black cap off, which I can see from the video here is advantageous to leave on to remove the filter mechanism cap I had tried to twist this part in both directions but nothing moved, so I figured there was no option but replacementbrI contacted the owner/landlord, who arranged a plumber with a new cistern! I searched online and found the valve complete for roughly $22 Australian I sent him a picture, he was over in half an hour and it was replaced in just about as long Not only do we no longer have an overflow issue, but the toilet refills in less than about a minute instead of the 5 -7 it used to take!brHaving since found and watched this video, I attempted to open the filter/mechanism but it was indeed so old and fragile that the structures on the top broke before I could twist it off Inside there was nothing more than a few dust sized particles that looked more like the result of my earnest attempts to open itbrSo you know what, I'm happy Even though I may have been able to fix this without replacement, I do believe that in this instance the valve was just too old, I'm guessing it would have to be minimum12 years, maybe so much as 20? Not only that, the brand new valve unit was still only $22!!!!!! That's nothing these days On top of that my landlord now thinks (KNOWS) that I'm the best tenant in the world, because I saved him both a new cistern, and a plumber visitbrFluidmaster, you guys are brilliant! I am now going over everything on your site for future reference Your generosity in providing these videos is to be commended You have won another loyal customer ;-) I'll see you in 15 years! Problems with my fluidmaster, when I flush, black floater doesn't move when tank is refilling so it's constantly running So every time I have to remove toilet tank lid and pull up the black float for tank to fill up and stop the running of waterbrbr I did the flush 3 x {remove top cover on stem} but no minerals or tiny rocks causing the problem Black float seems to be stuck every time causing me to remove lid to get tank to refill by manually lifting float Suggestions ? {Don't have money to spend, unemployed} Comment from : Rainer Rain |

Thanks for posting this up! We live far from any major city, so it's very hard to persuade plumbers to come out to us for small jobs like a slow-filling cistern Our grey/black Fluidmaster intermittently stopped filling, before totally stopping except for a small drip (taking about an hour to fill) It is as old as the house at 19 years, so we figured some washer/gasket needed replacing or the whole inlet valvebrbrAfter hunting around for few minutes, we found this video We followed this procedure exactly, and the toilet is now filling up as normal The whole thing took no longer than 10 minutes including hunting around for a screwdriver for the stop cock brbrNo need for a callout, and no need for any plastic waste by replacing the whole valve assembly It's great that Fluidmaster are putting videos out like this It puts a lot of faith, confidence into a brand, and fuels brand loyalty Good for you!brbrThank you Fluidmaster!!! Comment from : Richard Griffiths |

Thank you! That filling noise was getting annoyingbr👍 Comment from : Michael P |
Thank you so much for this video! I just recently installed this fill valve and after a few days it wouldn't stop filling the tank I thought I'd have to replace it but I followed your steps and it's perfect now Comment from : Dave |
What about a loud ass whistle from the fill valve I did take it apart cleaned the diaphragm still I have to whistle Comment from : Travis Enmon |
Very simple and easy to follow instructions I did exactly as you described, and the water started pouring through the little spout and shooting down the tube to fill the tank, the next time I turned the water on But The very next flush, it would not flow through the spout and pour down the tube I don't see any visible debris, and I repeated the process 3 times Each time, the first fill of the tank worked like usual, and the next flush reverts back to the dribbling, no-fill situation What's next? Comment from : Lindsey W |
Thank you very much! The water in my toilet tank was above the water line and would not stop hissing and filling the toilet bowl, however I did not know how to fix that I am definitely not a plumber or anything of the sort, so this video was a huge help! Comment from : M R |

What a great way to start the Christmas season - turn a suddenly appearing sound of potential dread into total silence Getting a firm grasp on the fill shaft and lifting the float assembly before turning and removing the top did it for me There were two little pieces of what looked calcified debris that when removed left only the sound of silence brbrBefore I held it firmly I had visions of an old Abbott and Costello plumber skit as the top wouldn’t come loose Whatever happens over the upcoming holiday shopping season, I’ll have this in the back of my mind! 👍🤓brbrCheers 🍻 Comment from : johnps30 |

Thank you for posting the repair I change over the guts of any toilet I own when moving into a new home with Fluidmaster parts Easy and simple to find replacement parts at any home repair store, easy to install and adjust They last many many years without failure The failure I had was not parts related but sentiment build up Your video made it quick and simple to repair with no additional parts required I did vary slightly as having worked on aircraft many years I am aware of how easy plastic parts can break I removed the valve and carefully pressed in the top and twisted slowly, it came off easy with no breakage It was loaded with sentiment I rinsed it clear with clean water and used a tooth brush to clean the rubber seal and rinsed it clean Reinstalled it and just put my hand cupped over it as I turned the water on for final rinse Installed the cap and it works perfectly Removing the entire valve was really unnecessary I found out but caution is how I approach any problem These problems in life always seem to strike at the worst moments, as I was caring for my wife who is ill So your video and quality products many life easier when problems arise To bad every product isn’t so well engineered and supported Thank you Comment from : Lstwhknight |
Thank you thank you!!!! I am almost certain this just fixed it!!! Woo hoo!!!! Can't tell you how happy I am! Comment from : Nikki B |
Love it when these videos are posted, ironically this should be done when installing a new toilet that has this type of fill valve (several companies use the fluidmaster fill valves) saves having this issue as when you turn off an old shutoff valve sometimes a piece of the rubber seal breaks off Comment from : PittiePal |
Fixed it!! Perfect! Thank you so much guys Comment from : Jared Baker |
Worked perfectly! Thanks so much, you've save my wife and I such a headache Comment from : Lucid Mooses |
Debris Fixed Thank you Comment from : Michael Pleva |
I just installed a brand-new FluidMaster400AH valve It works great Is the cleaning procedure the same? Is there a rubber diaphragm inside the cap or is it an O-ring? How often should it be cleaned or should I wait until it malfunctions? One last question my 400AH is brand new but it fills the toilet pretty slowly Is there a way to increase the flow? I want to understand this valve so when it comes time to repair it I'll know what to do Thanks Comment from : Dave Bowman |
Thank you so much I just found this, and it worked perfectly Very clear instructions Well Done! Comment from : Jenelle G |
Thank you!!! You just made my morning! I feel like a champ for fixing the toilet and followed your video step by step 😁 Comment from : Nine and Vine |
