What is missing is what happened to German prisoners on the Eastern front during and after the War

Here we go again Russian prisoners on return "half treated as non persons, the other half executed" In actual fact returning Soviet POWs went through filtration camps and 92 were released back to civilian life within a few months (the remaining 8 were convicted of various crimes and sentenced to terms in GULag camps and some to death) And of course, nobody who actuallt thinks about it (and is not engaged in propaganda) could think otherwise After the huge losses of the war these men (and women) were desperatly needed for the huge work of reconstructionbrbrAnd I wonder by what coincidence did this documentary omit that 58 of Soviet POWs werre starved to death As SS Gruppenführer Backe, Secretary of State and later miniister for Food and Agriculture remarked in early 1941, before the start of Barbarosssa: I will not feed useless eaters 2 million of those Soviet POWs were dead by February 1942; the remaining 15 million died laterbrbrAnd I wonder why no mention is made of the German excuse of the USSR not signing the Conventions not mattering, becasue that does not remove the obligations of a signatory And that while indeed the USSR did not sign, multiple decrees were issued by the Soviet government that effectively mandated the same treatment of prisoners as equivalent to the conventions BTW, the main objection the Soviets had to the conventionsis that it forbade propaganda among the prisoners and they had high hope that once removed from Nazi influence the ordinary German soldier would realize that his place wa by the side of the revolutionary proletariat not surprisingly, they had little successbrThe GUPVI (the organization running the Soviet POW camps) did try to improve the lot of prisoners, to the extent as was possible during the war All this is clear from the multiple Soviet/Russian archives ( which became researchable after 1991) the have preserved these documents

@36:55 - That looks like an American soldier guarding a German POW camp with an MG42 IMHO it was the best General Purpose Machine Gun of the war It's high cyclic rate made it something to be both feared and respected on the battlefield 👍

My father was captured at the Battle of the Bulge He was a prisoner at Bad Orb prison camp from December till April He would not speak of it ever and never celebrated Christmas for the rest of his life! He was the oldest of 15 children and 4 of his brothers were in the service at the same time I am proud to have him as my father!!!

It seems that after all the death and horror from WWI and WWII that the human race would have figured out a better way of solving our issues, that we would have somehow been more understanding towards each other, and lost our gread for power Although I realize that evil does not compromise its will to destroy, and I realize that good and evil sometimes is determined by the side on which one stands My fear is WWIII and mankind doing it all over again on a much greater scale Maybe it is our destiny to destroy ourselves, I just can't understand why

German POW held in Va Beach Virginia, at the end of the war the enlisted were sent back to Germany and the officers were given asylum if they wanted to stay in America

There were many POWs from Russian held areas that volunteered to change sides and fight for the Germans After the war most were sent back to Russia and were shot Also many from the Baltic States fought for the Germans Some were allowed to stay in the West, but those who were sent back were either sent to a Gulag or shot

Germany abided by the Geneva Convention with POWS in an exemplary manner as long as they could - the shortage of food and conditions towards the end of the war were no different than what the German people suffered All the propaganda is now worn so thin, its time we were more honest: everybody was brutal, everybody tried their best at times but all failed, there were no "good guys" in the end - only victors WW2 was absolutely brutal and made monsters of everybody

Germans generally did not suffer from food shortages until the end of the war So starving prisoners was deliberate, they also withheld RED cross packages for quite a while

While my father spent 4 years living in harsh conditions in a POW camp in Germany from 1941-45, German POWs in America and Canada enjoyed a life of luxury in comparison They were very lucky men indeed
