Some fun dyes Alex may way to try (both will require an alum mordent) - purple iris flowers, I did this as a solar dye once and it turned out a seafoam green, and blackberry vines, you can just chop up the vines and leaves and boil 'em up, you can get some nice dark greens Also - Fool in the Rain is my favorite Zeppelin song too! Comment from : @pyramiddyeworks9746 |
|
I learn so much just listening to you both Thank you much Comment from : @patriciapamponette7774 |

Started following your Knitting journal just recently and I am enjoying it immensely Looking forward to picking up past episodes, great company while knitting and also such great inspiration Will start my first Ranunculus soon, just having a hard time deciding which yarn to use I can not wear mohair alone but mixing it with wool is fine Was also just considering s-g very rustic and natural will share with you once I start this first one (and I have a feeling it will not be my last;) So lovely to have Alex on the show too Warm greetings to both of you from Iceland Comment from : @almaragnarsdottir9319 |

Hey guys, loved the podcast Yes, natural dyeing is great and I'm glad you overdyed the turmeric as it's fugitive Onion skins have tannin in them and this naturally occuring acid (which is also in tea) so they are colourfast Turmeric will wash out, as does beetroot ( if you try it) and cabbage how annoying is it that beetroot will stain your clothes forever :-| but yet if you try to dye with it, it will wash out, even if you have prepared your fabric with a mordant like soaking in alum first or scouring cotton with alum acetate many of these plants and so on are not colourfast so if down the track you decide this foray into dyeing is going to become commercial, please please check what is fugitive and substantive Adding iron as a mordant is fine but it's not going to keep the cabbage or the turmeric There's good information out there on dyeing naturally and Maiwa is the best site for this There are a couple of books as well, Rebecca Desnos has one Marigolds have natural tannin in them which mean the dye will be substantive, tea, coffee, pomegranate skins - marigolds and flowers all shouldn't be boiled or they'll tirj to brown mush so temperature does make a differenceAll have natural tannins and don't need a mordant but vinegar is not a mordant like iron is or alum The story of the hot and cold water isn't really true but with cabbage which is a strong material, hot water is better however, just for a bit of fun, and again, it's not a dye that is colourfast, you can modify the colours of cabbage by adding bicarb of soda to the mix and get blue OR add lemon juice or citric acid to another pot of cabbage and get pinks and red have fun Lubrbroh by the way, Alex, your knitting is amazingly uniform congrats Comment from : @ludouglas1 |

"this bergamot dream walks in " 💞brI love the hat Alex is wearing is there info on a pattern and the yarn? the color is wonderful and I love the shape i always put little pointy elf tips on my hats for myselfbrI'm hoping to try dyeing with spring nettles I also saw a post of a project using dock for dyeing and the color was a lovely range of yellowy mustard to gold to green/olive/khaki since dock is easy to find growing all over I am particularly excited to try it I'm really on the hunt for plants that give colors in the green spectrum, which seems surprisingly rare given that plants are green 😄 Comment from : @annettestephens534 |

Rejnfan in danish (Tanacetum vulgare) - Tansy in english - is a normal dye- and in older days medical- plant Most dye-plants have been medical plants n earlier days But it can give the most beautiful yellow color - especially if the yarn has been treated with something before dyeing - the finest yellow comes from only using the flowers which look likes smal buttons And the leaves is also giving a nice green Its common in Denmark - along railroads and big roads, it comes in June here Comment from : @pialindeg |

Thanks for another lovely episode If you like to learn more about natural dyeing, you can visit the podcast of Maria Muscarella called "Ninjachickens Podcast" Maybe you know her - but if not, it is really worth to watch She is also a knitter and spinner, an eco-printer and eco-dyer and if you search through her videos you can find some with all the dyeing-stuff Comment from : @gertihackl6682 |
|
You make nice and even knit stitches Alex, and in a year not much will seem complicated in knitting - in fact not much is complicated, we just have to learn how to do it And dare to experiment, stitches are just rows of loops after all I have been knitting for 55 years and I am still learning new things - I love to Happy knitting both of you Nice to meet you Comment from : @pialindeg |
|
Have you ever tried dyeing with black bean? It's a cold dye, and yields a lovely grey-blue similar to what you got from purple cabbage(minus the awful smell) Sadly, it's not very light fast, though so it's a fun little project, but not something to use for things that get a lot of wear You two are soooo cute together BTW! Comment from : @dumplingrrl |

Yes another great episode, and yes you have viewers from the southern hemisphere, New Zealand Comment from : @jo-annefalconer6280 |
