It's surface hardened And at that thinness, I guess too thin to get away with that I have one of the larger of the two and have hand stitched some of my own rasps, and so on, and it's fine Typically, a rasp isn't a coarse removal tool - that would be done a couple of hundred years ago by guys with gouges, drawknives, and shaves and the rasp component would be an interim step brbrI think if you test the teeth on that, you'll find that they are somewhat hardened brbrUntil someone bends an older one that was made in the US, we won't know if the USA made ones were also only surface hardened I doubt they changed process much in mexico or brazil, they just do everything a little less well Comment from : @daw162 |

Nicholson has turned to crap, they used to be the best files/rasps out there I have a #49 & #50 I bought about 20 years ago, they're like using a power tool to shape stock Their saw files are garbage now too, you get about one saw sharpened and that's it Comment from : @mlankford6077 |

i just baught a new slim tapper triangle/6 sided nicholson file to cut saw teeth for a day while my main files were getting reetched in vineger took two passes on the blade just marking my cuts out and it flattened the corner of the file so i did what you should never do and took a known hardened file to the new one and yes the new one was so soft the hard file ate right in aparently its a very low carbon tool steel that wont properly harden to what a file should be luckily i got the saw all recut to 10ppi as needed before my old file was reloaded with material almost cost me a customer because ive been swamped with orders and just had bad timing with my etch i need to order new old stock before it runs out or these new files are gonna put me under cuz they wont cut right Comment from : @mikegingrich3123 |

Such a shame I purchased some Nicholson products made in Mexico They aren't too bad, nothing like what you have there I found them on sale at tractor supply so I'm happy with mine, so maybe the Mexico ones are ok for cheap USA made would be best of course, rhx for sharing Comment from : @vinceimp9581 |
