Visiting the cathedeal in Cologne Germany The upper roof was made from steel in 1860 This saved it from burning in WW2 Why did they not consider this in rebuilding Notre Dame?

amazing work, all that brand new timber and all that NEW technology that is being put into the ancient cathedral brIt is upsetting that all that old workmanship is lost, but now the cathdral will last many many more centuries to come and it will have far less chances of further mishaps brIt is seeing a new age of only the best craftsmen who work on it and restore it to its former glory

After the fire I believed it should be restored to look exactly as it was when viewed from outside, but materials, instead should be modern The 'aguille', for instance, could be entirely constructed with composite materials like carbon fibre, instead of wood and lead as the original one, but aesthetically it should be as identical to the original as possible And the roof structure also could be made of metal, or a non flammable material, this way hundreds of old trees would have been spared
