I remember I was at a restaurant with my dad when the TV showed live footage of Notre Dame on fire We were shocked and hoped that the firefighters would be able to put out the flames before it could get worsebrbrThe power suddenly went out in the restaurant, so we had no idea if it was gonna be under control soon or not It wasn’t until while I was in the bathroom checking Twitter, I saw that the fire had gotten worse, as the spire had ended up succumbing to the flames I was absolutely horrified, and I honestly didn’t know how something like this could’ve happened, and still to this very day, nobody knows what caused the Notre Dame to turn into a blazing infernobrbrI’m honestly just glad the entire cathedral as a whole didn’t end up suffering the same fate as the Library of Alexandria Otherwise it would be a huge heartbreaking loss for not just France, but the rest of the world as well I do hope one day I can visit Notre Dame the next time I visit Paris, and by that time, the cathedral is fully restored to its former glory

678 yrs ago Notre dame was basically completed using green lumber and is still standing Today they build things with dried detentional lumber and it won't be around in 50 or less due to poor quality and workmanship

I'll have to admit, I was in support of the "green house" glass design that was suggested It would have provided fresh produce and a second story for visitors and church members to meditate and pray in brbrI equally love that they decided to make it exactly as it was though It's a great modern challenge to try and recreate techniques of the past The stained glass probably has not been this thoroughly cleaned in ages, just imagine how much more beautiful it will be

Reminds me of the Carlton Tavern which was built in 1921 and survived the Blitz in WW2, but was demolished by CTLX in 2015 so they could build a modern flat, but was ordered by Westminster to rebuild the pub exactly the way it looked prior to demolition - the residents even said they thought it was a hologram because it looked exactly like the pub before it was destroyedbrbrHoping that Notre Dame is also rebuilt like a hologram of its past self prior to the fire

The restoration work processes are so fascinating I wonder if it's better to simply recreate new stained glass as an exact copy but with better more lasting materials/techniques that were not available in the time it was made I wonder if that could be applied to all of the Cathedral For example, the massive wood beams could be saturated in a clear coat of fire resistant material, or maybe use rust resistant steel underneath the stone masonry to ensure a solid hold of the structure
