er er er em em er er Comment from : Gary C |
Would be nice if anyone made a modern version of this Would be really nice to have a 1 kW (or whatever is feasible) portable generator which with no other danger that CO2 could be run indoors (ethanol fireplaces same deal - moisture and CO2) Normal gasoline you can't because exhaust is not pure CO2 but a complex mix of not fully broken down waste products Comment from : HifiCentret |
Great little set that is, I like it, the sound is almost like internal combustion, AKA A petrol engine But it sounds nice non the less Comment from : Alan Briggs |
I want a stirling I can fuel with wood, and heat my home with the waste heat Comment from : William Readling |
Hi Barumman, wonderfull piece of kit you have there I was amazed to see the Philips logo on it I wasn't aware they build machines like this at PhilipsbrBeing i a town next door to Eindhoven (founding ground of Philips) I am very much amuzed to see this machien Thanks Regards, Sander Comment from : Koning Bolo |

A pleasure craft was built in the mid-1960s as a Stirling power demonstrator by Philips engineers It had a helium pressurized single-cylinder rhombic drive engine producing 30 horsepower and was fueled by kerosene Comment from : douro20 |
You really have a piece of history there :D I would love to get my hands on one of those really great and compact rugged units Comment from : Picobyte |

" I have no idea what transistors have to do with this generator using an unconventional engine"brWhen radios used tubes (before transistors) they needed more power than batteries could reliably supply for extended periods in areas without powerlines Philips spent years to develope these generators to supply that power & started selling them just about the time transistors came alongbrFYI: a new market for these would be for "Prepers" who build fallout shelters Stirlings can run on any hear source, gasoline generators can only use petrol (and methane) Comment from : FarSeeker8 |

Very simple thing to do
use parabolic mirror to make heat
and make the string engine rotate
just like it is explained in this website

It is sad this was discontinued Even a 3 year old know why The electrical system was intentionally designed to fail in order it will get a negative opinion at a time when people were not so worried about oil prices Phillips can regain popularity if they re-invent this engine and have every household posses it

Of course that doesn't matter when the cost and benefits still out way the more efficient engine Comment from : Hueristic |
Hi, Yes it is Comment from : barumman |
Is this a Beta Engine? Comment from : heatherroseisrflyer |
it runs at 8:20 Comment from : Dont be evil |
I'm sorry but you are wrong There was an american firm that made the "STM TMG" It produced 75hp, weighed 30 lb (If I remember correctly) and produced electricity at up to 35 efficiency from fuel to plug Diesels can get close but they must be very big indeed
It's downside was being H2 filled at up to 150 bar Comment from : m1aws |
Thank you for posting this video This shows how realistic and serious Stirling engines can and should be, with perhaps some features which make it easier to start and more convenient Your comments were very helpful, and I hope that you have success popularizing Stirling engines I hope to fine tune a solar-powered Stirling engine to drive another, smaller one, to take advantage of the cooling power for air conditioning from the smaller one Comment from : 007TruthSeeker |
As for efficiency of fuel to work they can reach up to 70-80 percent, but as for thermal efficiency they are comparable to internal combustion engines Comment from : FuriousX |
Thanks, Barumman That's half og what the typical ICE powered generators run to acheive 50 Hz(cps) I haven't got the data for the generator, but I assume it is 220V AC Comment from : jormot |
Hi, The Philips engine runs at approx 1500 RPM they had the benefit of specialist winding
equipment to make the wire regenerator which has very low resistance to the airflow,
also the heat input is quite high Comment from : barumman |
This profissionally built engine seems to run at a much higher RPM than the amateur built models I've seen Do you know what RPM? What makes this engine run at highr RPM? Comment from : jormot |
When you say :" They are very efficient", please give me a number, that term is very loosely used lately by many people, but I have research the philips sterling, and it would not go over 75 efficiency, it was tested by the Army for 1015 Hours, they were hoping to get it up to 10 but couldn't do it no matter what they tried
Look around, every company involved in sterling engine's high efficiency syndrome was bankrupt ( Stirling Energy Systems , WhisperGen MicroCHP, sun power, etc ) Comment from : KoalPilot |
They're very efficient, but to get usable power they have to be too big So the material cost and inconveniences are too high Comment from : 72fr250 |
@trudgechr
That is not incorrect, remember, stirling engines are not efficient at all, that's why they are not commercially manufactured to produce significant power ! but as he indicates, they are an educational tool Comment from : KoalPilot |
@schenkel123 I don't know if that's good or bad :) Comment from : barumman |
great video, thanks :) Comment from : Daniel Winter |
Hi
I worked at the college you refer to for nearly 25 years so our paths might have crossed I'm contacting you today to let you know that there are some interesting Stirling Engine photos on eBay as I write (17/09/11) If you would care to respond with your email address I'll forward on the details I found them interesting as it is multicylinered in a circular format with pistons driving a swash plate Find me on rubyreddevon@yahoocouk signed Dave H Comment from : rubyreddevon |
@bluephantm
I mentioned the brake on my second Philips video :) Comment from : barumman |
LOL I thought it was on the ground I thought it was as high as me i rofled when he turned it around with one hand xD Comment from : crud42 |
8:22 and you finally run itchrist Comment from : Toms Rusty Drums Channel |
@barumman metireal's are nue i was going to gen post but yes i found one years ago power plants best to think of it as a vacume engine really Comment from : starionnsw |
@sandokanelvaliente Hi, I intend making another video in the near future showing the starting sequence
Keep looking, Cyril :) Comment from : barumman |
Please you how you start the enginne! Comment from : Guillermo Gimenez |
you should run it at max temp every so often otherwise unburnt carbons can build up Comment from : Peter |
how can I get a driver has to use a village of India, it can be heated with wood fire it? Comment from : Valdemir Souza |

PHILIPS MP1002 CA
Beta configuration
c'est un piece de musé maintenant
Très difficile à trouver car il n'a été fabriqué en Hollande (NL) qu'à 150 exemplaires !
dommage
cordialement
only 150 PHILIPS MP1002 CA Made in NL : 150 In the world

@Skoda130 Hi , Yes the atomizer works on the same principle as a carburettor or a paint spray gun:) Comment from : barumman |
@johnnyanonyme Hi, Yes they could be made to work on Solar energy, John Ericsson had a Stirling Engine working on Solar in 1872, as they say " there is nothing new under the sun" Comment from : barumman |
