So ok…when I attempt to alt pick it’s like I’m fast walking Not running There are different muscles used from walking to full blown running fast brbrSo with alt picking here is what no one ever tells you…in order to pick fast you must engage your wrist hand into a stiff position which goes into tremelo picking I can do this on one string but try going to the next string…forget it Comment from : @steveo78681 |

that's not really the most efficient way to do it, although it is might sound counterintuitive and tricky at first to change your habit, the best technique i've found so far comes from one great jazz player and says and i quote 'when you go down you down-pick, when you go up, you up-pick, when you linger on une string you alternate and if you think about that and try it yourself you'll see there's much more ecnomy of movement to it and over time it's going to make your playing much faster and more fluent i used to play with this technique in the video which i figured to be the best and it took me a while but that really changed my playing especially when speeding up Comment from : @millennialcasualtiespress5927 |
copado esa cuestion Comment from : @andresgatti8041 |

can give some tips on how to sync finger with wrist movement to pick fast Comment from : @pranjalchaudhary5842 |
I totally get this now -- the easiest way to do this (for me) was to just always start with an upstrokebrMy hand figures out the rest for mebrI guess what I was used to is doing a combination of alternate and economy picking because I would use the downstrokes to my advantage and hit the next string Comment from : @5urg3x |
I've got a questionbrDoes it djent? Comment from : @alephomega386 |

Great alternate picking lesson, but I really struggle with the stretch between the first and second fingers ie first finger playing the low G and the 2nd finger playing low A Guess it's something that comes with practise but I always have to use first and third fingers for these type of exercises Comment from : @simonrourke1978 |

Very nice tutorial Thanks for sharing Comment from : @StephenMcKynnley |
I've got a question Why would you up picking the first note when you go from the second string, three notes per string, starting with downpicking? it doen't make sense Your right hand comes perfectly down for a down-picking, not an up-picking Comment from : @Kromush1995 |
Very nice dude Comment from : @voodoolife |
Here's something I learned and a tip for people trying to learn alternate picking When you go to alternate pick, all the movement is in the wrist not the forearm so if you get stuck trying to alternate pick on strings, move the pic to like a 45 degree angle It helps out alot! Comment from : @skullkeep3 |
i have problems with alternate picking when i play scales lets say 1 st position g major scale and i always or in a habit of economy while changing strings but while moving from 1 st string and taking up i use alternate is economy a bad habit for that ?? please would love a advice :D Comment from : @diwashshrestha3376 |

Hey, very good website!! Very organized Comment from : @hashtag_number9212 |
you know it's mostly a matter of habit, many guitar players would rather play some parts in economy picking, but strictly alternate picking is good for many reasons: a) the right hand moves continusly in the same way, so it's easyer to control; b) once you get the movement right it's easier to build up speed; c) it's better for beginners since it helps you keep the rhytm, in facts when you play D-U-D-D-U-D, the 2 consecutive downstroke get played closer, so the 1st one is shorter than the others Comment from : @FrancescoGambaro |
It's more economic for your picking especially when playing fast, just think about fast songs by Satriani, Vai and Metallica, you wouldn't have time to go D,U,D D,U,D also it would feel awkward, you wanna keep the momentum going Comment from : @Tcrumpen |
"The root" is called Ionian if we're talking shapes/modes The root is the first note Comment from : @Songwriter4God |
Alternate picking is better for note by note improvisation, economy picking is better when playing large "known" figures Comment from : @kirkguille |
The first is alternate picking The second is called economy picking Alternate sounds more aggressive but you can give economy picking a try and see how it works for you! Comment from : @SuperSossossos |
I like but you talk to much!!! Comment from : @raym314 |
Because is fastergive it a try! Comment from : @joseman43 |
Its just different techinques It sounds different mainly, just use what you prefer and feels natural tbh :) Comment from : @menamgamg |
Constant down up motion means that you have a constant you can practise and you can build of more momentum, and alternate picking is better for rhythmic changes
Comment from : @MrRoden96 |
my right hand is faster than my left hand(pick hand),,,can someone explain to me how to solve thisbad english sorry Comment from : @mikebobby7684 |
If you play it that way, that would be considered economy picking as opposed to alternate They are just two different techniques Comment from : @mrmaybe |
My teacher suggested economy picking but I still feel a bit slow through transitions and playing faster Comment from : @BlindFireH2O |
I completetly agree with you man These type of "chromatic exercises" completely exposed my lack of fret/pick hand synchronization You really need to take it slow and let time and patience dictate how quick your bump up the speed After all what is fast playing if its sloppy/choppy and sounds like crap
Now lets get back to practicing alternate picking Comment from : @happytobeproud |
its all preference mate But with strict alternate picking you pick the way he is explaining Your method is actually pretty useful itsself I love economy picking Comment from : @happytobeproud |
I wipe mine down with cleaner and conditioner after every session, keeps the grime off and makes it stay looking like new Comment from : @uptheirons726 |
Because its an alternate picking exercise Not an economy picking exercise Comment from : @uptheirons726 |
Think about it After the last downstroke on the high E string you would have to do ANOTHER downstroke on the B string when you start it over again That's pretty awkward Comment from : @Moh1Z |
i watched this video long agoreally helped my accuracy and co-ordination
i CAN play these at 200-220 bpm
trouble isi cant play runs across stringsespecially when i have to play a downstroke on the next string after and upstroke on the previous one while ascending
any help??? Comment from : @jupiter1001000 |
once i ve been told that keeping your fretboard clean makes your strings last longer Comment from : @MakuthePOtHead |
If u master this tecnique u tend to gain best speed and right hand indipendence Still it's pretty hard to pull out Comment from : @AlessioZozzone |
Need this for the solo in "Trippin on a hole in a paper heart I keep "Tripping" up on that part Confusing Comment from : @Rachamacha |
hue fingering Comment from : @RaGinGAsUrA |
It's not really about "better" per-se You will not be able to achieve theoretical "maximum speed" with down up down down up down since you have to basically "skip" a motion with your wrist versus strict alternate picking However, if you want accents with a gallop like Metallica or a lot of Thrash bands, as much down picking as possible is the way to go It also can matter which strings you are playing on if moving from one to the other, as "inside picking" is hard to do for most players Comment from : @stippnahtan |
love this guy great teacher Comment from : @dwill1970 |
well not sure but for me its kinda faster to go down up down up down up coz the down up down down up down kinda makes me pause a bit, well idk thats what i think haha not really a pro XD Comment from : @supermassivedonut |
