hey shouldn't the fan orientation be the other way around? like shouldn't the fan suck the air out instead of pulling it in? I thought that orientation would pull air in? Comment from : Nvd1987 |
Got your fan blowing the wrong way Comment from : Euko |
This might work better with thermal pads of the correct thickness Stacking them reduces their conductivity by a good bit Comment from : crowonthepowerlines |
I put 3 fans on the backplate and my FTW3 3090 gets 122 MHs Eth and 33 Ghs on Ton at 94 C Seems like EVGA did a better job cooling their 3090's Thanks for the video have been wondering about using a heat sync along with it Comment from : Jason Newton |
I did this on my 3090 FE with an AMD stealth cooler and fan that I customized Everyone thinks I'm a traitor for having an AMD cooled RTX 3090, but I used thermal paste and zip ties to secure it For as janky as it is it doesn't look that bad and the temperatures are awesome, having an open air chassis helps as well Comment from : Tony |
In my experience, having the fan blow upward and away from the GPU cools it better Having it blow downward just messes up the case airflow I've tried it on two different 3090's and having the fan blow upward lowered VRAM temps by about 8-10C Comment from : ChartaBona |
Myself wondering the same thing… I’m at 80s mhs so I can keep the temps at 106 at least, which is still super high!brbrGaming is one thing, but I feel like I should’ve bought the equivalent in 3080 or 3070 for mining! Comment from : J B |
thats the 3080 my man is all good you welcome Comment from : Lil Dj |
Someone needs to be sued for this At this price doing such a bad job with thermals and having the audacity to not rectify or even admit the issue is just ridiculous On top of that they warn that they will void warranty if your replace it yourself Comment from : AllergicToBS |
More heatsinks and you might be able to get the full efficiency out of that card and prevent your vram from sending you to RMA in a year Comment from : Depressed Hombre |
-200 core power limit 80 fans 90 over 120mh thank me later Comment from : AK Aquatics |
TF happens to that poor NPC 5:34 Comment from : Pieter Vrijdag |
Shame you didn't try flip that fan for pull and see the temps I think it would made a difference 😉 thanks for sharing I going to play with it over the weekend 😃 Comment from : jobes |
I used a spare intel cpu heatsink I had laying around and without a fan it lowered vram by 6-8 degrees I did not use thermal pads though This is on a founders edition 3090 I plan on adding a fan as I think I could get even lower temps In the coming weeks I am going to borrow a flir camera from work so I can pinpoint the best location to place the heatsink I also want to try different styles of heatsinks, I see on ebay there are custom designed heatsinks for these cards now Comment from : Nathan Schild |
I'd redo with quality padsbrHave you tried re-padding all pads in the card with quality pads? People have reported 20-30C difference from that GL Comment from : Ihaveausernametoo |
buddy just some advise, that card backplate is graphite, not a very good conductor of heat, you need to attach your mod directly to the vram with thermal pads however if you attach this mod without the backplate, the gpu die wont contact with the front heatsink properly the 3090 just sucks, its a major design flaw, double sided memory is not a good idea Comment from : dredd 1100 |
is 3090 was so bad optimized back in march ? Because i have 124mh/s and 94c vram right now and 90 when case is in lying on the ground just with nicehash auto optimization, its really best choice, u dont have to find settings to achieve low temps u just click button and it does optimize it very well, Comment from : Джеймс |
ty keep making content earned a sub!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Comment from : Freya Fox Music |
Nice idea but useless without adding thermalpads on the VRM under the backplate as the heat is not really going to the backplate without thermalpadsThermalpads under on the backplate will give you 15-20 degrees celcius lower for sure no doubt about that Proof is all over Youtube Comment from : M L |
This looks great I have 3090 with the same issue However, how would you accomplish this in an open frame rig? My GPUs are all mounted 90 degrees angle from your setup I know there is double side adhesive tape but I hear heat transfer is poor Thermal pads better but how to keep the sinks and fan from sliding down off the GPU given the orientation of my GPU? Comment from : Chris G |
The heat sink should have made complete contact with the backplate You’ve only got about 40 of heat sink removing heat towards the fan Comment from : Norfolk N Whey |
Is there a way to do this for the 3090 FE, it’s so hard to attached any external heatsink or anything on the surface of the card Comment from : Varillah |
Doing this in 2 days Comment from : Greg Whittle |
Fan yerleşiminiz hatalı Fanı havayı çekecek biçimde yerleştirmeniz gerekirdi Bu şekilde sıcak havayı ramlere geri yolluyorsunuz Comment from : Berk Bozkuş |
thermal double sided adhesive tape It sticks and doesn't come off impossible to remove Do you know how to remove it? Comment from : MAÇ ÖZETLERİ |
Dude you have tape overlapping tape You are trying to conduct heat through giant air gaps Might as well shove some fiberglass insulation in there, too Comment from : J C |
Can you test it with copper ones Comment from : Looksmaxxing |
put your radiator in the upper side of the case and put some quality noctua fans in front of the case redux 140mm 2 fron fans and a 120mm 1700rpm in the back and your temps will truly drop 15$ per fan Comment from : Nuclear PCs |
Which heat sinks have you used? Thanks! Comment from : Asryan |
Best heatsinks are aluminium with copper pads copper tranfers heat very fast Comment from : KnygnešyS |
Why not thermal tape instead of pads ? Keeps heatsinks properly stuck Comment from : KnygnešyS |
maybe use thermal paste instead Comment from : AmeliaBuns |
what the fuck are those settings LOL and just from watching that installation of the thermal pads and the heatsinks i could already see this kind of testing/result lol Comment from : brun yes |
I covered the complete backplate with the small heatsinks, and the orientation was longitudinally, creating long air tunnels from the front to the back of the card Without thermal tape I got the temps to 80 C and with the thermal tape to 76/78 C Without heatsinks it was at 90 C Comment from : Sebastian Salazar |
Thbaks for the tips will be doing this today to my 3090!!! Comment from : Globy Eduardo |
EK has an active water cooled back plate they are selling for one of the 3090 models I imagine more are coming but sandwiching your gpu front and back w/ water cooling sounds like a win to me Comment from : Shawn Lopez |
I love this dudes passion Comment from : |
Make sure the pad flat on both surfaces It looked like they were all uneven There cannot be any air pockets That was my issue when I tried this Comment from : FriscoBoaters Garage |
are these pads with glue? , I can't find any good pads that have glue, the only thing I can find is 6 W / mK Comment from : coolpw |
I run my cards between 76-84 vram temp without even opening them up Just with hearsink on the backplate and 2 3000 rpm fans blowing on them at full speed 1 blowing on the heatsink and the other on the side of the card Keep in mind that I have them open on a rig Comment from : EMS Visuals |
This is great 👌 Comment from : Niall McArdle |
Did you put thermal pads between gpu and backplate? if not that is why your temps didnt lower much Comment from : ResidentES |
Thanks for the test! You certainly reviewed comments from previous videos and took in a balanced outlook on the information from there!brI feel like a few degrees difference is worthwhile for a mining application I'll be looking to get some high quality thermal pads and a good case fan or two myselfbrI've been thinking that the position of the thermal sensor on the card is heavily influencing results as if that area is not being as effectively cooled as other areas of could read higher or lower and that could be why we get very different results from card to card Comment from : RaindancerAU |
Maybe flip the fan the other way? It's pushing air into the GPU, wouldn't that trap the hot air that's coming up from the bottom fans? Just a thought Comment from : Rokusaburo |
Towards the end of the video you blamed the heat sink and fan for the lack of drop in temps I think it's due to the fact that there is so many thermal interfaces between the memory die and heat sink You have the die->thermal paste->plastic memory package->thermal pad->backplate->thermal pad->heatsink all in series Each boundary contributes greatly to impeding heat flow The only way to get good temps in a setup like this is to go die->thermal paste->plastic memory package->thermal pad->heatsink That's how it's done on the front of the card by most AIBs Comment from : Stark |
i have a Ryzen CPU cooler fan that i took off the heatsink and positioned over my Vram so far so good Comment from : CryptoDuck007 |

Absolutely digging this content mate! Keep up the good work Comment from : drinkero 1 |

I have fckng gigabyte 3090 brCPU Temperature 42 - memory 98, PL-70, 90 hashrate brGigabyte piece of shit Comment from : Jora Pg |

Stacking thermal pads is always bad, but i understand why you did that Comment from : Greg Greg |
