A significant problem is maneuvering onto a path or road from grass, often the council has not packed the soil down and your wheel will either sink in or not mount the concrete or ashfelt resulting in a crash Happened to me twice, once resulting in a broken collar bone, and once sprained fingers, happened to a friend with loss of several teeth Comment from : Andrewmic |

My experience with all of these problems in cycling:-br1) my first day of cycling was on an unofficial road which had nothing but rocks, gravel and sandbr2) BRO, Use that problem skillfully and you will be able to use it as a braking system (it worked very well when my brakes failed)br3) I broke my hand and a car's side mirror doing it LOLbr4)i don't use them too while cyclingbr5) Not a big deal, just apply half brakes of the rearbr6) yeah this i did and hurt myself badly, better ride slowly and conserve you energybr7) just try to avoid the obstacles (if you are an expert, better lift your bicycle off the ground)br8) Just go slowly and have 4 eyes Comment from : supergamer |

In over 9,000 miles of road cycling, I've had just one impact with the pavement That one was at 24 mph and cost me one helmet and some skin, temporarily It was on perfectly smooth pavement and happened so fast that I'm not sure how it happened I think I removed my right hand to wipe sweat, and "put the hand wrong" when returning it to the hood But my entire memory was "nice fast ride, here comes the pavement, how the hell did THAT happen?" Comment from : Jim Wetzel |
Watch out for tram lines also in the city They are so slippy No grip for bike tyres I've seen some falls caused by them Comment from : R OC |
More like tarmac in the face moment Comment from : nikodc2008 |
If you are riding in a city that has streetcars (I think they're called trams in the UK) be very careful not to get your wheel stuck in the groove of the rail, otherwise you will end up on the pavement If you have to pass your wheels over the rails to make a turn or dodge something up ahead, make sure you keep a wide angle between your wheels and the rails as you cross the tracks I had to learn this lesson twice before it caught on, even when I was riding bikes that had wider mountain and hybrid tires Comment from : Foggy Goat |

My chain broke yesterday on a steep climb The outer plate separated from the rivet I recently took it to my LBS so I'm disappointed that they didn't fully inspect it It was my first ride out since the service The chain was rubbing on the frame side of the front derailleur when in small front / big rear cogs Might this have had anything to do with it breaking? brbrIt has knocked my confidence a bit, out me of standing and pedalling hard I really want to gain the confidence to push hard again Any advice on how to prevent chain breakages? It is particularly scary when clipped in! Cheers Comment from : Iron Man |

DO NOT bother with eye contact, they will look straight through you and you'll get a false sense of safety DO look at their wheels Wheels don't lie; it's easy to see the slightest creep forward (Well, except spinners, if anybody's still living in the early 00s) Comment from : CSN |
Haven’t we all misjudged Connors before? Comment from : Nathan Williams |
When I got back on the bike, at age 66, I was worried about crashes, and what could happen to my old bones After sbout 900 miles of riding I had not fallen off the bike, and was telling myself maybe I was going to avoid having a crashless than 100 yards later the frint wheel veered left snd I went backside over teakettle and landed in a heap with the bike partly on top of me The only think bruised was my ego, but I did lose some skin I looked yo see ehat I must have hit to make the bike veer off so suddenly, but the toad was smooth as glass I think the riding gods were just PO'd at my arrogance and wanted to teach me a lesson Comment from : Tom Smith |
Be very careful turning a 90 degree bend that has wet leaves across it Try and avoid the leaves if you can as they are like ice and you will lose the front end Not fun Comment from : Jack Jones |

Was doing a uturn at 15-20km/h, pedal struck the tarmack, wheel went in the air but managed to stay upright Only time I've pedal struck and stayed upright! Comment from : DiscoParachute |
My first crash was really weird I was mountain biking, the bike was a bit too short for me (length wise) So when I turned hard for a sharp turn, my foot scraped the front wheel and was yanked into the spokes by the shoestrings The wheel pulled my foot into the front fork and stopped, sending me over the handlebars I was somehow uninjured other than a nasty bruise, but the front wheel had come off and was bent around my ankle The front fork was also bent, and dumped hydraulic fluid all over me Either my bike was made from very cheap material or I have adamantium bones Needless to say, the bike was totaled and I parted it out to fix my good bike Comment from : J-bird |

Cars and ice Not knowing how to ride with studded tires When I approach icy surface I tend to slow speed forgetting the very fact that you have to maintain speed in order to stay upright Car tires dig grooves on the icy surface of the road, so it is full of surprises, especially when covered with snow I hate it I hate winter and I hate ice Still, even in great, summer road conditions cars have crashed with me, because they were not looking at my direction Comment from : Stacyn videoita |
I cycled into the back of a car on Boxing Day Comment from : Sharpie |

Should mention about slippy ground when scanning the road ahead My first crash was riding a bicycle lane with moss and water (with tress along the bicycle lane) with my helmet cracked My second crash was riding in an roundabout with oil on ground (probably some vehicle leak oil while turning) and I was hospitalized for 3 days and minor bone crack on my wrist Comment from : Tony Tsoi |

Don't forget proper maintenance! I didn't maintain my chain and gears properly, so my chain skipped as I went over a bump and ended up breaking my collarbone when I hit the ground Comment from : Sam Werner |
Don't overlap wheels on purpose But, also, don't ride directly behind the front rider's rear wheel I like to be a couple of inches left or right, so that if they do slow down suddenly, you have some distance to move up along side them (briefly; before you slow down) Instead of bumping their rear wheel with your front Because it's always the rider in back who will go down Comment from : David Sullivan |
