You make that three times harder than it is If you’re so worried about wasting 2 gallons of water use the toilet flush it with the water valve off Remove the valve replace it with a new one Turn the valve back on you’re done

I believe you could have just replaced half of that by leaving the black plastic pipe in the toilet and just pulling up the gray part and replacing the gray part

I'm absolutely amazed you did not empty the cistern by simply flushing it! I realise there would be a cupful left at the bottom which could be siphoned off in a few seconds or simply collect the amount that would run out when you undid the valve, in a bowl or suchlike

You didn't need to replace that part That part with the grey top is the problem Turn off the water and press down on the top & at the same time turn it a quarter turn anti-clockwise and lift it off Underneath the top is a rubber washer that simply needs to be removed and cleaned as it will be gunked up Refitting is the reverse of removingbrbrPs It's also a good idea to clean the rubber washers housing at the same time
