I inherited a ton of old cat 5 cables from my old employer and they have been great I had bought a cat 6 cable several years ago and off the shelf, it did not work I thought i was missing something, is it correct that we don't need to worry about backward compatibility going forward?

Why are you talking about an upper limit of 1gbit? If you own a nas with 40gbit connection of course you should go with cat 6a/7 pretty standard four years ago

I have a CAT5 cable that I installed in my house in 2003, and while it's not rated for above 100/100, the computer detects it as gigabit anyway and puts 1000/1000 down it anyway

New motherboards can take in 25 GB and 5gb speeds now if not more And with fiber-op, it's not unusual to approach those speeds And transfer rates at those speeds would probably give a better rating test

I used the newest cat8 out now for printing and it is literally about 10x faster than 5e That is with my internet download speed usually sitting between 20-50mbps So it clearly makes a difference
