See how big crater was made in cocrete floor after 20/04 launch What is gonna happen on Mars? How it is gonna land without falling?
Comment from : hundredcaws

Refueling Starship on Mars is really not too often talked about today Seems really hard to handle If not ridiculous 13000m2 of panels? Who is gonna assemble that onsite? Given all this for 400 days waiting seems so long for one flight Enough to feel stranded on Mars with no help or rescue RTG generators might be solution here People seem to fear them too much
Comment from : hundredcaws

kevin crosby
Can Starship go from LEO to Mars orbit return without refueling in Mars orbit Without landing on Mars or Earth just orbit to orbit? Or would Mars orbital refueling still be need for the return to LEO?
Comment from : kevin crosby

HARDWATER channel
Marcus, I would totally appreciate if you would send me the fuel charts you displayed in this episode Actually completely absorbed in the fuel use predictions regarding a refueling station* Thanks!
Comment from : HARDWATER channel

R SM
Aren't the landers standing tall on the surface of Mars vulnerable to dust storms which can whip up strong winds even if the atmosphere is thinner than that on Earth ?
Comment from : R SM

David McChesney
It’s too tall to land on Mars It should be lower, lower center of gravity with 4 or 5 wide legs like the LM
Comment from : David McChesney

Mage AmenRa
A base in space, equvilient to an aircraft carrier, that is making the journey from Earth to Mars without landing The Starships can dock, while the carrier is near Earth The combination of fuel port and living accommodations a carrier could include everything we see in the Von Braun Space station When near Earth a fleet of cargo supplies needs for the station and Mars surface Several of these carriers would increase the payload exhange I would love to see Casper, Wyoming become a tanker base, using solid rockets that utilize our coal and abundant sulphur

Kairon156 [Woulfgang]
I'm so glad Space X is thinking seriously about heading to mars While it would be super expensive I would send 1 unmanned mission to Mars than a Manned mission behind it so they have double the resources ready and waiting encase something goes wrongbrbrI do like the idea of there being some sort of fuel depot/station left in orbit of Mars
Comment from : Kairon156 [Woulfgang]

Richard Anderson Molina Betancourt
what if we send tankers to mars to refill the return?

Super cool video!

John Sostrom
It would make sense to send portable nuclear generator for providing the electricity for both the colony and Methane production plant The solar panels would still be good for the mobile equipment needed
Comment from : John Sostrom

branden jones
We need a gas station at the moon
Comment from : branden jones

Un Known
it would be insane to not consider using nuclear power plants to power the mars base and first starships initially at the beginning they'll need reliable power, otherwise it will be a suicide mission

IdRatherBeFlyingAnXWing
What are the odds of the first mission being crewed vs only drones to start gathering resources/ potentially 3D print housing out of mud/clay, or even digging out an underground shelter?
Comment from : IdRatherBeFlyingAnXWing

William Ervin
Hmm, seems a bit overly complicated and requires a lot of launches Maybe send a starship who's cargo is mainly methane, and it slowly fills up with oxygen using an automated partial-ISRU system? If you refill that starship in an elliptical orbit rather than LEO, I'd imagine it could carry quite a lot
Comment from : William Ervin

Monterino Overson
Would be cool if 3 starships close together on mars surface could be wrapped airtight externally to make use of the space in the middle for a big habitat
Comment from : Monterino Overson

tom thumb
velocity is the least of the problems Manned Mars mission isn't going to happen for at least 80 years
Comment from : tom thumb

James Hogarth
Considering the need to shield humans from radiation and solar storms, is it possible to design a boring machine that would fit on starship that could bore tunnels I can think of a lot of applications for boring technology
Comment from : James Hogarth

Chandraprakash G
Use of km/s for inter-planetary speed is perfect usage, keep the good work!
Comment from : Chandraprakash G

Paul Mayer
Let's ignore that we need the engines to collect dust for months and fire it back up I guess What could go wrong after all Abounded Water on Mars looooolbrFor the crewed part let's make just numbers without justification so that we get the result we want NICE!brThe science is strong in this one
Comment from : Paul Mayer

Mitch McQuoid
Laying out all the infrastructure will need to take place without GPS right? Does anyone know how all of that will work? How do they locate Starships past the sphere of gps
Comment from : Mitch McQuoid

Jemand Zufälliges
I guess a nuclear reactor on mars would be useful and hopefully they can use the reactor on the flight to mars to boost their engines a bit
Comment from : Jemand Zufälliges

they could use tanker units as boosters for manned unti by coupling to manned unit until approaching mars??

My native language as an Austrian is German, so sorry if some words are not correct: when discuss with german space flight people, we speak about the "scale height" (german: Skalenhöhe), means that the surface of mars is 40 km higher than that on earth when coming from space In other words the entry is the same until you come close the 40 km mark on earth, means 0 km on mars That is not very important, because even on earth you loose the majority of the velocity above 40 km Coming in on earth, you have 2 phases: maximum temperature and than maximum drag you leave the first phase anyway above 40 km The same 2 phases you have on mars, but the second phase is much shorter, so you must break by rocket engines (or airbags) at the endbrAnyway your calculations may be correct I always have the problem with arguments like: "we first have to " Because this is an excuse to go later and later and later as Bob Zubrin explained in his book "The Case of Mars" Elon is completly correct to ask an every piece on the Starship and in the mission: "Do I need this?" Reducing complexity AND time as much as possible There are always people waiting to cancel everything We must be quicker than the opponents

For the expendable starships, could the lunar starship fill that role? I’m assuming Mars atmosphere isn’t dense enough for the wings to make a sizeable difference?

XavierBetoN
13 km² for solar farm that'd only produce 40W/m²? What about having a tiny nuclear reactor that'd produce hundreds of kilowatts in smaller size than a single solar panel?brWhy people stopped being fascinated by energy of the atom after the cold war? Why use chemical rockets and physical panels for god sake? Space is already partying with lethal doses of radiation, why play it safe?
Comment from : XavierBetoN

Another step up in content quality The research is impressive as well as the imaginative speculation So many possibilities We will indeed live on Mars, and comfortably

I wanted Mars colonization to happen as soon as possible ,we have the moon a place to re fuel and the space station why worries about it?, Caused I wanted so badly to see it happens before I get there without any star ships ✝️✝️ ♥️❤️ space X
Comment from : Vincent Croft

Jeffrey Black
what if you sent five starships together as a single mass requiring one starship to get them to mars orbit landing the other starships which use fuel to land and the return ship would be topped up by the others After launching from earth they'd individually be topped up in earth orbit with fuel before they magnetically clamp together If you applied everything you said in your workings how would that work out with five starships travelling together They would all seperate once in mars orbit leaving one in orbit
Comment from : Jeffrey Black

Scott Ryals
Knowing how deep is the water table is at the landing site could be important information

Hi Marcus , définitely, Elon MUSK should hire you!
Comment from : Christophe Lamaison

Alex Devey
This is probably daft but I was thinking if you used the thin atmosphere to your advantage, meaning if you just kept orbiting Mars lower and lower slowing the speed, could you slow enough for a different sort of landing I suppose it might look like a conventional plane landing but obviously not Really not sure, it's a question 🤔
Comment from : Alex Devey

ChessMasterNate
The Moon is the real prize You can set up a solar farm with no wind sand blasting issues And it can make a lot of energy You can use that energy to mine and refine metals You can also build a mass driver and send stuff all over the Solar System for use in those locationsbrbrThe fact that we have already been there? Only relevant to tourists
Comment from : ChessMasterNate

Jetsetter
Idea of space elevators both from Earth and Mars would save massive amounts of fuel Just move huge space ships with a lot of cargo between orbits of the 2 planets before Mars become self sufficient
Comment from : Jetsetter

Scotty Boman
Getting the fuel needed for an Earth landing all the way to and from Mars is unnecessary and wastes fuel The returning ship only needs enough to get to LEO It can refuel there with just enough to land

guluta alan
You have to include in the calculation the 05 m of polyethylene all around the habitat (ok, I know part of it will be food and dried residues) to shield the astronauts from the neutron radiation This weights, too, quite a lot
Comment from : guluta alan

fisterB
Very high quality video and probably because of that the comments are informed and most of the suggestions are quite sanelight weight Mars-LMO transit, Aldrin Cycler style bigger ships not for landing and so on
Comment from : fisterB

Gary Camp
Nice job Marcus I especially like the Aerobraking I am a retired JPL Mission Controller who worked on Magellan You may know we pioneered aerobraking to circularize our orbit and the spacecraft was never meant to do that Now it is often essential I wonder if the Starship needs the tiles at Mars? Will the thin air of Mars heat up the hull that much?
Comment from : Gary Camp

ugly kaka
wow the amount of information is to hard to keep stored I had to put 6 paragraphs of info in my notes lol
Comment from : ugly kaka

PiotrekLDN
I am not being racist but have you consider the fact that vietnamese for example are much smaller than let say average European Have anyone made a calculation of how much can be saved simply by choosing certain types of body built F1 drivers for example are quite often chosen based on their height and weight
Comment from : PiotrekLDN

PiotrekLDN
Just my groceries for week weight so much and occupy so much space it will be difficult to sustain a bigger colonie on Mars without them producing own food and that will most likely be biggest challenge
Comment from : PiotrekLDN

For mars we will need landing legs

more practical approach is scavenging Earth orbit for floating power sources and ship them to mars even send ISS to mars - it's chipper
Comment from : Dir Aziz

love the video, maybe visualize the data a bit more, not all watching on a format that allows seeing the numbers tbh
Comment from : jluke168

Jason Wood
I am wondering if a fully loaded starship has enough fuel to carry 3-5 other starship that are attached to low Mars orbit for refueling It might be possible to attach several starships together for a single supply transfer as well This way with two transfers, you can have the supplies and fuel already there
Comment from : Jason Wood

Dave P
The Enterprise had shuttles to land on planets because it makes no sense to land an entire people-transport starship on a planet I think that a Personnel Landing Vehicle (PLV) is a better solution than trying to land on Mars in the same starship that you used to get you there I am suggesting 2 different Starships: One type is for Personnel only Another is for cargo only and therefore would not require life support systems Cargo Starships can double as ground equipment, and can carry the fuel and launch apparatus needed to equip the PLVs for launch into Mars orbit The PLVs can dock with the personnel-based starships in orbit, and the personnel starships will never need to land on any planet
Comment from : Dave P

Dex Lab
Im sorry but no amount of math will convince me that Starship can get to mars and back without refuelling I'm all for supporting SpaceX on its own but this sounds like typical Elon bullshit
Comment from : Dex Lab

Everett Degrasse
It seems like the more ideas and scenarios people come up with, the more likely it seems that this could really happen!

A Canuck
I don't know how I misssed this episode Thanks to you and your team for doing this, Marcus House
Comment from : A Canuck

Jerri Willman
You are trying to make this task much too hard Use a clam shell faring on the front of starship and off load a landing pod just before starship enters the mars atmosphere Let the pod do all the braking and use a series of parachutes like they do with the mars landers The starship(which has not slowed down), uses the slingshot method to change directions(180?) and is headed back to earth at a faster speed with fuel to perform the flipflop prior to touch down All you are out is an expendable pod with a few thrusters and a smaller payload but you get a rapid return of a starship Not only that, if you strapped on a couple of super heavy boosters with heat shields, they could be used to send starship off on it's way smokin hot with a full fuel load AND have the three booster assembly with enough fuel to catch back up to the earth(or moon) to land for refuelling Burt Rutan said to use the lowest tech that will do the job Plus use the kiss method An astronaut once said "get your a_s to Mars" We need to send those dead-beats from the FAA on a none returning trip to Mars No, I don't believe the excuse they are putting our, the FAA is playing Biden politics The dirty sobs
Comment from : Jerri Willman

David Broxholme
It would make sense to have the starship to stack in earth orbit

I was 10 when they landed on the Moon At that time they were talking about landing on Mars by 1999 That didn't happen I now am 62 and just want to see mankind land on Mars and also see us go back to the moon

Have you run these numbers past Elon? I’d be delighted to hear his response

Hondo
water exist in space (solar water) and now we know how to convert waves into particles so in theory we could create oxygen atoms ?
Comment from : Hondo

God Zilla
This is great, but we dramatically lack of visibility on the calculations and the margin policy here It would be much more transparent to share those tables and associated calculations
Comment from : God Zilla

Jon Reed
The solar yield calculations per sq meter are way off, on the low side I’m not sure how the numbers were obtained, but a 1kw solar panel array we use here should generate roughly half as much energy on the surface of mars In Arkansas, we’ll get roughly 4kwh of yield per day from that 1kw array Why couldn’t we expect at least half that yield on mars, especially when the thin atmosphere guarantees virtually cloudless skies?
Comment from : Jon Reed
