Hot wire might work to cut the foam, once you set it up would be able to cut any shape you want as well Comment from : Callum Taggart |
I use a drill press with the hole saw and rest the mat on a piece of wood when my wife wants me to make these pucks for her, easier to hold the mat and line up the hole saw and you can get more pucks out of each mat Comment from : Peter B |

Hi Hoocho, big fan, love your work Wondering if you have any thoughts on a puck system for an NFT with rectangular piping Do you still make it bigger? or Can you just drill holes of same size like you do with your puck propagator? Comment from : Akuswarateaches |
Ok might have watched this over a year ago and said I like net cup… now after de rooting and cleaning over 100 net cups I’m watching the vid again and off to Bunnings to make some pucks… lol cheers mate Comment from : BRINKST4R |

Love your channel! Quick tips: A deburring tool cleans up the edge of the holes in the pipe much faster and easier than sandpaper To keep the holesaw from skipping around if using it without the pilot bit, you can cut a hole in plywood and use the plywood as a jig on top of your foam If making a lot of these, I would try making a "cookie cutter" and heating it to burn through the mats Comment from : Tim Allen |
I just set up a 100 plant nft strawberry grow with your puck idea So far they seem to work really well!brIt was a bit of a pain to go through and make all those pucks thoughbrYou should consider patenting the idea and getting a manufacturer to produce them Comment from : Patrick Mortenson |
A lot of people use cheap foam insulation board you can get at the hardware store to back up cuts on plywood I think that would work well Comment from : Patrick Mortenson |
Instead of using holesaw to cut 90mm hole, I use 90mm pipe, champhour the end of it and use it like a cookie cutter Give it a few twists and u get a super neat cut Comment from : hew jater |
Doesn’t the cut to support the plant damage it in some way as the plant grows and the stem becomes thicker or does the puck just expand to accommodatebrA safer way to cut the holes is to make a template out of scrap timber with the hole cut Put this on top of the mat as a guide and the hole saw won’t jump around Best also to put some kind of base underneath for support Comment from : Paul Speirs |
Hey man, your puck is some NASA engineering, bro! You just saved the planet, regarding food shortages! You deserve a nobel peace prize! Comment from : Jai Tzu |

use a clamp to hold it during drilling? Comment from : Dreamlife Films |
Just an update on some pucks I made I transplanted some lettuce seedlings and maybe they were a bit too small as the foam squashed the stem and killed them off For the next batch I will drill a small hole in the middle to give them a little room Other than that they seem to be working great so thanks! Comment from : Nigel Murden |
Doesnt the tension of the puck around the stem restrict plant growth? Comment from : Stan André |
I am currently experimenting with the pucks in my NFT system but Im not seeing as much growth in as in my hydrotower - so while the pucks are an awesome idea, is there a proper amount of water coverage on the root system? My plants were transplanted from soil so the root system is never as long as in your videos, I am just unsure what the problem could be Comment from : James S |
Hi guys, have any of you used baffle plates when using the puck system in NFT ? Because baffles are used to keep the nutrient below net cup normally So is it needed on NFT with pucks? Comment from : Gav Trotter |
The hardware stores suck in my country (no perlite, no hydroponic fertilizers, no eva mats) so I repurposed some cork mats as pucks - they're hygrophobic and very plyable Works great so far Comment from : Andreas |
What’s the smallest diameter you would use for a nft system? Locally I can only find 2 inch white pvc (sched40) in stores and can order 3-4 inch white ABS is available ( black sched 40) but curious if that would be I’ll advised Comment from : Approaching Passive Home DIY Renovation |

Comment from : Teguh |

Lol it's made for gardening Comment from : Damon Gardens |
I am going to be using your pucks in the system I am building I am using 4x4 PVC square posts for my leafy greens and am using a Dutch bucket system for tomatoes and cucs My question is this It would seem easier to use the same puck for propagation and just transfer to the rails when the roots are long enough I know space will be more limited in the propagation container, but this way I’d have one size puck and not risk damage on the transfer Thoughts?brbrTo drill the pucks, I plan to use the hole saw with the exercise pad resting on some of the 2” thick rigid foam insulation A firm base and can be used many times before having to discard Comment from : Steve Mac |
Great video! Thank you very much for all your informative content! Comment from : Augie Zehner |
