Dang, Quint, your biggest mistake was gunning that boat's engine wide open! If you hadn't done that, you would've succeeded in returning to shore and luring the shark into the shallow water like you were actually planning to do, and you wouldn't be stuck out there in a disabled boat, waiting for that shark to come along and eat you up!

Watch close at the throttle controls When Quint floors it to drag the shark he has a double sea star solutions red and black, and when he starts for shore after being dragged, the throttle control is different I know there was 2 orcas, I wonder which controls belonged to the actual boat that worked

Watch close over Quint’s left shoulder, you can see a turnbuckle or something with rope tied to the barrels for the scene When they changed all the sound effects from the original mono version, they took it out You used to see it better and more in the old original Looks like the editors didn’t get it all I hate Spielberg changed it all, the mono version was way better

So a quick theory on QuintbrbrWhen he realized he was totally out matched by this Freakishly uncommon sized Shark his PTSD from his Indianapolis days kicked in and he either wanted to go out like his partners from the war did or he sped the boat up because he was in complete fear and did not want to die that’s why he wore the engine out as fast as possible because he was completely scared🤷🏾‍♂️brbrAnd yes I know he said he was going to “drown him“ But realistically he was probably trying to make it back to some sort of Shallow water so they can just get off the boat

It’s has now been established that Brody broke the Orca When the black smoke filled the cabin and bridge Hooper went down the ladder and quint also left the bridge leaving Brody alone up there at the controls Before the engine exploded you hear a grinding sound and that’s Chief Brody pulling both the throttle and transmission gears It was discussed on the Podcast Jaws obsession episode 10

Just seeing the stress on the men and their boat gradually getting more and more severe as the sharkthe demon seems completely unfazed by their efforts Quint finally starting to realize that he's dug himself a much bigger hole than he initially thought with Hooper realizing the weight of the situation as well, Brody being thankful Quint is finally seeing the mistake he made, and all of them are in disbelief The 3 starting to break and snap at eachother as the ship literally breaksamazing

Still one of the greatest action sequences of all time! My Father told me when he saw this the theater went silent after Hopper said that famous line, "He's chasing us, I don't believe it!" Could you imagine if this was happening to you how scared you be? A 25 foot 3 ton great white chasing you down in a crippled boat!
