Do you put your irrigation under the mulch or on top? I would think it would take more water if it was on top, but how would you be able to check your irrigation occasionally?

My hardwood mulch got infested with gnats this year… I removed it I need to remulch but I can’t find the straw I want to use If my plants are in fabric pots, would a black bag over the compost work as a mulch replacement or would that make my soil too hot for tomato’s, squash, and cucumbers? I had one paw paw tree, it produced fruit But I had to cut it down because it sent runners all over my yard, the leaves became a problem in the fall to clean up (I’m old) I got to hate that tree I am still digging out runners 3 years later While the fruit is delicious, I found you have to eat it soon after picking because it doesn’t keep well Too much for one person and I had trouble giving the fruit away

I also 'usually' start my cucumbers, zucchini, etc indoors and transplant when they are strong The reason most people say not to do this and direct seed instead is that these plants are fragile and easily shocked or broken during transplant Just be super careful with them and you shouldn't have a problem
