Why can't they make starship without the rocket inside of it and make the rocket booster bring it into orbit? Comment from : K Gabor |
stupid is as stupid does Comment from : Leslie Allen |
Starship is a long way from being ready, and NASA needs diversity in options, especially given Elon's arrogance and erratic decision making (Elon has his own goals, and they do not always line up with those of the United States as a whole For example, he shows a remarkable coziness and willingness to cooperate with dictators like Putin and Xi, or maybe he's easily played by them)brSo we DO need other companies to survive and thrive, just to prevent total reliance on a mercurial billionairebrThat said, development of a Starship Space Station could increase orbital and cislunar workspace volume by huge amounts That is very useful for the Western nations and it would be a wonderful laboratory for SpaceX to test the long term habitability of Starship for Mars missions that would likely last over a year each Comment from : I-Love-Space |
Linear shaped charge would make it easy to separate the "rocket" part from the living space part A module that can provide connections can be fit into a cargo Starship It'd be much thinner than the inner diameter of the Starship, but would provide that functionality A few of those could connect together, acting as a central "hub" Starship living sections could be connected to that via scaffolding, maybe inflatable tubes that would connect to the central hub? Comment from : Fred Steffen |
The great thing about using the Star Ship framework as the starting point for a station is that they don't have to "cut out" anythingbrThe current build is based on possible moon landing One travelling to Mars would look differentbrOne purposed for creating a space station would have more room for people and less room for fuelbrIt wouldn't need as much fuel Its just parking in orbit and adjusting as neededbrYou talk in this video like there can only be one design Comment from : Stuff_And_Things |
Show more space station Info lets send a space station empty of people to Mars Put it in to orbit We can have something nice and needed when we get their A staging port Comment from : wendell curvin |
Mars is a DEAD planet and you are never going to "live" there Comment from : Steve Borchard |
all of them should be made with the Ring Decks, because they all could function with planet or acceleration generated gravity type force, or without gravity as a space station Plus it would make manufacturing much easier because construction workers would be able to walk on the decks Comment from : Wrightsville Beach |

So much room for activities Comment from : Mark Howard |
They can still technically add more rings and make it way taller if needed Super heavy will be able to lift it Comment from : Paul |
Definitely will need defense system for the space station to defend against extraterrestrial objects hitting it Comment from : Dragon y2k |

Hub and spoke design can solve the fuel transfer problem and the artificial gravity problem A prefab hub carried up in sections, assembled in space 8 docking ports in the hub for up to 8 spoke-starships radiating out from the hub centre Hub spinning mildly to induce fuel-ullage 'gravity', or more aggressively for long-term gravity within the spoke-starships Plumbing through the hub to allow fuel transfers between the spoke-starships, balancing out the overall centre of rotation, and allowing passage from spoke to spoke Each spoke being a functioning starship nose-docked to the hub A massively redundant system A low-thrust nuke rocket could even take the whole damned thing to gently Mars Comment from : Kirk Tierney |

I'm watching this on Roku TV, and the closed captioning keeps showing "crude mission" for "crewed mission" and now I can't unhear it that way Comment from : Tracy Hardy Johnson |

With regards to Space Stations : I would like you to review Orbital Systems (they may have changed their name , but this is the last one I know of) Comment from : MsEnzoh |
Can be used as a space gas station/ orbital station Add a second starship nose to nose Comment from : Jack Ferguson |
Just take all the stuff out of Starship and send up an empty hull The craft will be much lighter and won't need as much fuel to get it up there Of course you will need some way to guide the empty hull into position brMaybe have a craft to grab it or put some smaller rockets on the empty Starship to guide it Comment from : William Burroughs |
I see an episode of tiny homes Comment from : Nicholas Nerios |
You could also use a pre-fab space station launched inside a Starship thats built out of the newer inflatable modules, that would let you launch a huge space station thats even bigger after you deploy it Comment from : empbob99 |
It's kinda a space station already cause like It will be one for the 6 month journey to Mars Comment from : Ducque |

with the extra power of the v3 engines do you think thay can get the booster into orbit ?bra 9m tube (fuel store) or extra storage / living spacebrwhat goes up doesn't have to come down Comment from : shane walker |

On the “starship lunar lander”: emplace a suitable number of recessed flush, extendable landing legs, which conform to the nose section, invert crew occupied floor areas to the opposite side of each deck, place a suitable number of vacuum engines on protracted arc mounts such that their extension would rotate the engines, - their thrust center lines, 180 degrees, and a few degrees distance outboard, providing a “downward thrust” for an “inverted ship”aspect, lunar landing brMaking crew efforts and risks for egress/ingress at what “was” the nose, entirely a doable prospect, provide a much more stable ship platform /footing, eliminating much of the huge, landing thrust-debris generation problem in the process Comment from : Will Dodd |
Yes it is really stupid to place that much mass of anything in LEO, the make an arbitrary proclamation “oh well let’s make a new one to concentrate treasure any eyes on And burn the tired useless icon In effigy of progress and advancement brVacate it and slowly over time, cheaply boost it to a stable permanent orbit, even one of the Lagrange points, if for no other reason than it’s mass of possibility recyclable material in the future Make it the nucleus of a tow destination of other debris over time If they take to long to de-orbit, their mass warrants it, cheaply ion-thruster it some-one-place-safe, over time brIt will cost more and be plain dumb not to Comment from : Will Dodd |
a plasma cutter in the hands of an experienced user is very easy to use While stainless steel has a very good abrasion rating diamond cutting blades are not required the plasma cutter would be ideal the primary issue would be the fact that cutting into an empty methane tank can cause an explosion Fortunately the solution to that issue is extremely easy all you need is a pair of valves & pressure suits for each person onboard at the time one valve connects an external port to the Methane tank & the other valve is a direct vent from the crew cabin to an external port once the Methane tank is equalized to vacuum & the crew cabin as well it would be perfectly safe to cut the tank away Comment from : Astroponicist |

SpaceX is toying with the disconnect ring fairing, which would allow the StarShip to connect to other sub rockets that could disconnect and drop back to Earth This would allow the Upper State of a StarShip to connected in long string of Upper Stages Or the other option from a payload option is that they could haul inflatable habitats up, and use them to create the orbital ring As you mention, there is room for a 7 meter x 10 meter long payload And an inflatable habitat can expand 3 to 10 times their size Offering significantly more space than even a starship could provide Comment from : ENetArch |

What you mean lazy,brStarship itself can be the stationbrbrMore cost efficient!! Comment from : 3nity-C |

With inflatable and deployable modules Comment from : Brad Clifton |
Flaps could go too Comment from : Brad Clifton |
If this was permanent to space, we only need rapvacs and, no return fuel for landing So, theory says less tank, more cabin space An extra and decreased ring Comment from : Brad Clifton |

Every country and their Dogs are sending their space ships to the moon and beyond, but the only way Humans are going to really get into space is for all of us on our small planet is to pool our technologies, but proberly after world war three Humans may wake up, anything is possible? Comment from : Anthony Misell |
Zero crew portion is built at this time All the fancy Pics mean nothing Decades away to have any approved crew module Comment from : Darnice |
better solution for the space station, would be to build it usually, like old space station and put those rockets instead of some additional modules! Comment from : ika jakonia |
No, it's not Comment from : Barry Lucas |
And how if spaceX integrated boster and space ship as single ship for space station, it will huge space station, right? Comment from : I Wayan Sudiasa |
Horizontal (Circular) decks would probably be the best idea If the decks are linked by bulkheads they can be sealed in the event of an emergency and each deck can be isolated It also retains its structural strength Linking them nose first is also practical as the engines will be facing out and can be fired for manoeuvring without cooking the next shipbrStarship could be used to launch some absolutely massive expanding station parts Comment from : Paul Gloor |
I still think there is merit in using starship for 0g manufacturing Depending on what it being produced, a round trip of Earth without getting to a stable orbit may become a viable solution For anything that needs more time in space, a dedicated station seems infinitely preferable Comment from : Mrsuper |
Are O'Neill cylinders out of the question? 😊 Comment from : Paul Obrejan |
I believe the starship could be modified in space easily enough with a well-thought-out plan especially if we use the ISS as a jumping-off point Yes, I understand this plan has problems but if we approach this idea as a dynamic plan, we could learn a whole lot about building in space as you suggested This could work Comment from : Jeffrey Galeski |

7:30 "economical" is foolish conjugation of the already correct term beconomic/b Comment from : Lin Yen Chin |

The amount of the ready state to a space station the Starship Space Statoin is, will bring the cost down to minimum at the minimun time possible That's simply because, what we build on earth is a lot faster & cheaper to make than in LEObrbrAlso SpaceX Starship can easily beome longer by welding more rings on the habitable part of the ship, without increasing the lift-off mass as mutch becasuse what we need is more space for more peoplebrbrObviousply for a SpaceX Starship to become a space station, it must have all these attachment points for airlocks, solar panels, etc in aerodymanic format So with minimum EVAs CanadArms , solar panel towers etc will be installedbrbrThe sturdier version for the circular multi-starship is with Starships in radial orientation With this configuration we take advantage of the vertical spaceous decks format, & totaly avoid the tiny submarine deck layout With radial configuration, refueling is posible with the "no "parts" method Also when more space stations of the same configuration are made, all these rings of Starships can be stacked on top of eachother to create the first DRUM space station configuration Comment from : TolisOnLine |
You could just cover docking points and windows with panels until you get to space you will have lots of extra weight to add from having no payload and no heat shield so customization is endless Comment from : to infinity and beyond79 |
How come I have heard tons thing about SpaceX than blue orlon? I know they have plan for that too But, I like VERA Station, they use SpaceX cargo rocket to build it Comment from : Earl |
How about using starship as a space ship instead of thinking of it just as something to ferry large items into LEO or using it as a space station If you want to haul a lot of people with a lot of other equipment onto the moon or Mars, could starship really act as a ferry to do that? Comment from : Rahul Shah |
Interesting Ideas Comment from : Barry Funk |
You know, in order to get a space station, you first need to get to space And Starship hasn't made it yet And possibly never will Total bunkum Comment from : Keith Murphy |
Excellent stuff bro Comment from : Clarence Hopkins |
I wonder, if you were to send up a whole starship as a space station, if you could actually use the fuel tanks for extra space If they were empty in orbit, that could give you an enormous amount of extra space Comment from : Bilbo_Gamers |
Is it a gender neutral station? Nonbinary? En keeping with with todays current space X policy Comment from : Eleven Bravo |
Hay you can build the starships in a way that they can hook together in orbit in space like a train 🚂 🚂 🚂 🚂 you can have a starship space train🤣🤣🤣 🚂 🚃🚃🚃🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃 Comment from : goku9000 |
7:18 yeah you can design the ship to split into multiple section's I think it should be three or four that way if you have another ship and they're both broken in particular sections of the ship you could alternate the pieces to get a ship that would work😊 Like Puzzle piece's🧩But that itself is hard cuz you want a ship that is structurally sound obviously 😊 Comment from : goku9000 |

The Space Race, You are arriving at similar conclusions to others by using StarShip as an orbital space station However its seems you are missing some of the very important reasoningsbr1 You are under the idea that space stations don't require gravity This is falsea human can not live in zero G The down sides of Zero G are severe on human health!brThe main reason for wanting to use StarShip as a space station is primarily for an artificial gravity configuration which will allow it to be done correctly for the the first time using a tether of 500meters to 1km linking TWO STAR SHIPS at the nose (It can not be done on the side, its not structurally possible yet people still show it this way) The long tether method offsets the draw backs of creating artificial gravity Basally we can not have more than 2 rotations a minute Some will try convince you that it can be done These experiments have been done, the conclusions are always the same Time and resources get waisted and the entire exercise eventually is scrapped Long tether is the only way to achieve healthy AGbrbr2 I see that some have compared the use of StarShip as a Space Station to that of using a shipping contain as a home I will disagree The errors in this perspective are too numerous to state in an afternoon The configuration of the ISS is horrendous and unstablebrbr3 You have stated that the complexity of the ISS allows for different modules to be attached Here again I disagree I do not see good design in complexitybrStarShip's could quite easily be quipped and setup on earth and rocketed into orbit In the dual tether configuration we could have several space stations in orbit at once around earthbrIt also won't suck resources to maintain and keep them up there like the ISS StarShips can detach and land back down on earthbrbrIf the NASA goes with StarShip space station They will get 10 space stations for the price of 1 With upgradeability every year & Artificial gravity that actually worksbrbrAs for shielding from cosmic rays Those hexagon heat tiles being places on StarShip could be upgraded to assist Or an outer fairing constructed for this purpose The Simple design of StarShip lends itself to a number of solutionsbrbrYou also need to consider the material that Starship is made of Here again the metal material does lend itself to conducting modifications while in orbit (Cutting, welding and reusing)brA few old lunar lander StarShips in Earth orbit will present a unique opportunity to tether them and modify them into a space station A small private rocket company might find this viablebrbrI don't think your final conclusion to this video is thought outbrLazy solution? I think using a fast evolving StarShip as a space station will ensure that we don't land up with an old out of date floating relicbrbrI also think that NASA needs to turn its attention to a Moon base and not waist its money on trying to crate another a rickety space station brI think the sooner they destroy the space station the better So longer as its replaced with tethered StarShips Comment from : Dizy Tizy |

Horizontal decks allows personnel to retreat to inner rooms in cases of emergencies like hull breach or debris / micrometeorite showers You can build out a central room or rooms that can support life until rescue, rather than everybody going to a central ladder or stairwell in a vertical deck setup Comment from : nlingrel |
Why overthink this The whole rocket is usable The bottom stage could be used and suround that stage with three boosters for initial lift off Those will return to earth as usual and the main stage will be used as refillable fuel storage for the space station Comment from : Barry Cohen |
