a massive problem with lidar/radar detection is it cannot determine actual speeds, only relative speeds There's no real difference between the signal reflected from a stationary truck you're approaching with 30 metres per second or a truck moving away from you with 15 metres per second and youre going at 45 metres per second, for example idk if thats actually how the numbers work out, their might be some scaling, but in any case you need the cars velocity and to calculate actual speeds from relative speeds from that It's probably difficult for the algorithm tesla uses to interpret incomplete data, like if some software anomaly causes trouble calculating all this type of stuff, the autopilot probably isnt well equipped to actually recognise or deal with that, especially given low resolution detection systems i thought the autopilot might disconnect in such circumstances though, but i dont really understand how the radar completely fails to miss an object in front of the car otherwise 🤷 Comment from : voidsaverob
