Just wanted to do everybody a favor here in the comments and let you know it's been debunked for awhile now that YOU CAN USE SOAP on cast iron It's damn near indestructible, it can tolerate a little soap as long as seasoning is still done, and you don't let it sit in the soap Comment from : @SuperPegMeg |
Awesome!!Thank you !! Comment from : @rachelrocha4319 |

Hi, my iron skillet gives a metallic taste to anything I cook in it Is that because it has not been seasoned correctly or enough times? Also, what was the total amount of time that your skillet was seasoned in the oven? Comment from : @mariepavlovsky6047 |

For the record, modern dish soap is fine for cast iron Soap back in the old days had lye in it, which is what destroyed seasoning Modern dish soap does not contain lye Comment from : @govols1995 |

If I don't have any canola oil, could I use Crisco or bacon fat? Comment from : @DanOffGridInWyoming |
No soap on cast iron is an old wives tale It comes from when soap used to have lye and that eats through cast-iron like termites and wood and will crack it I use normal dish soap which no longer contains lye and my cast iron is still very well seasoned I've had my pan for 10 years now and I have had no problems with normal dish soap Just make sure to towel dry the hell out of it when you're done cleaning or even put it on the stove at max heat for 10 minutes to make sure all the water is out Moisture is the part that will ruin the pan Comment from : @stugglefuggle8673 |
I don't know how I got here but I'm glad I did, as I actually have a couple of rusty cast iron pans that need some good de-rusting and re-seasoning Very informative video that is soothing and happy to watch! I'll have to try this with my pans (Is there any solid surface that baking soda and vinegar can't clean?) Comment from : @beesknees947 |

Weird video to post As if anyone with any shred of common sense couldn't figure out a task as simple as restoring a simple cast iron skillet This is like something I would've posted when I was 5 years old Comment from : @redeyestones3738 |
Clean off the rust, oil it down If no holes in the pan, your good to go Comment from : @chucktaylor4958 |
you really should be sanding that more bare cast iron has a silverish appearance Linseed oil it's the bestbrIt's also fine to use soap, just not much of it It's not necessary but as long as the soap has no lye in it you're fine but honestly if you have a good strong seasoning you only need to deglaze with water when cleaning it Comment from : @waffle8364 |
Wow, so simple! I have a lid of a Dutch oven that was left on the porch for a year I'm glad I watched this before attacking it with naval jelly and a wire brush Comment from : @andrewvelonis5940 |
I'd like to try cooking with a cast iron, but I see so many contradictory things on the Internet that it makes me worry I'll ruin it For example, some say you can cook pasta dishes in it while others say the acidity in the tomatoes will ruin it Which is true? Comment from : @hermanwooster8944 |
This makes me want to try a cast iron for once I've been using non-stick aluminum pans since the dawn of time Comment from : @Ardeact |
There's no problem using soap to clean your pan, I use soap on my carbon steel pan all the time, just make sure to dry it and put a thin layer of oil on it directly afterwards Comment from : @Drinkyoghurt |
Yep oddly satisfying 😊 Comment from : @FlipMacz |
Have you any advice on removing carbon build up, don't have rust just the build up Comment from : @pjm8183 |
