In my work and study of vintage computers over the past few years, I have consistently been impressed with Dell’s designs, quality, and continued legacy support Well done, Dell team! Comment from : @ObiWanBillKenobi |
I really appreciate you using both metric and imperial system of measurements when talking about weight and dimensions Too often am I annoyed at English-speaking youtubers not realizing they're using an international language Comment from : @user-jn3ul1gj7z |
I had a Dell Inspiron 9100 back in the early mid 2000s it rocked as a gaming system You could upgrade the CPU and gpu to meet the specs of the best alienware laptops of the era I currently have a Dell Studio 1735 I am setting up for my old library of 90s and 2000s games I did build a modern system by Xp standards, amd fx build with a 750TI gpu, but for the reasons mentioned here, I installed a modern OS and sold it I decided a Laptop will be the better option Anything too modern/demanding will likely run on my main gaming rig anyway Comment from : @x66Hawk66x |
get a dell m6400/m6500 for winXP that's pretty much XP maxxed Comment from : @wowitsshit9734 |

Win xp is an odd gaming era such a long time and so many hardware configs, any config seems to be specific to certain titles Comment from : @chassy7072 |
This XP laptop looks interesting :) Comment from : @MinaSmol |

They have so many better options even from dell Get the xps with the awsome fave plates Or hp had the zd8000, dv7000 which both had dedicated graphics, and desktop pentium 4ht cpus Dell also had a desktop replacement that was a tank looked like a standerd inspiron but had 2 inchs more on the bottom Lgr did a video on it Comment from : @askjeevescosby2928 |
I found one of thoughs one time at work in the trash Comment from : @japanesemickeymouse6694 |
My first laptop was the cheapest Dell inspiron they sold in late 2004 when I began university Comment from : @lummatravel |
a laptop with a via C7-m processor is better than a pentium 3 Comment from : @prezeskodaty4637 |
the geforce fx GO5200 graphics card is technologically ahead of several generations it is better than intel arc, the pentium 4 306 gigahertz processor is a good processor for laptops even pentium 3 that's why such a laptop is worth buying but linux red hat 40 enterprise must be installed Comment from : @prezeskodaty4637 |
40 gigabyte hdds since 2002 normally last 20 years with one magnetic platter but 80 gigabyte hdds fail faster with two magnetic platters Comment from : @prezeskodaty4637 |
I bought HP Compaq 6910p Windows XP-using Comment from : @kauppinen00 |

Mate its not lucked out you used the wrong phrase Comment from : @NathanChisholm041 |
this was horrible machine to support Comment from : @jurajzahumensky6378 |
Fun fact: it’s funny that you tried to run Crysis because this laptop was bundled with Far Cry 1 and could barely handle that This was my first gaming laptop and I used to play games like Counter Strike, Max Payne 2, Rainbow Six (can’t remember which version), Battlefield 2 I think Half Life 2 was the ceiling before I wanted to get a more powerful laptop Comment from : @Marceles45 |
actually that one would be perfect for Windows 98brFor XP I'd get something more modern from the Vista era like a core2duo and a Geforce 8600GT or 9600GTbrDell Vostro 1500 is a great one to look at Comment from : @NexXxus86 |
If anyone is serious, give a Lenovo T430/T530 with nVidia a try Set to discrete mode you lose a lot of the issues, and use nVidia drivers to set the scaling modes and enjoy better scaling The Fermi based GPU has XP drivers and is much much faster than an FX5200 (Like 60 of a 9600GT fast) Comment from : @milescarter7803 |
You might want to look into some scaling options that either integer scale or do the scaling on the nVidia card (it outputs full resolution of panel, but the rendering is done at a lower resolution) I had a 3k panel once and it's pretty bad as well Comment from : @milescarter7803 |
Eeewww FX is a terrible generation Poor performance and efficiency Hope it keeps working for you Comment from : @milescarter7803 |
there was a israeli comedy show in the earlly 2000s and it was sponserd by Dell and that laptop was in every episode Comment from : @notbuffy |
I had one of these laptops, the only differance is it had a Pentiem 4 HT proesser and 512mb of RAM and a DVD Burner Sadly it suffered from over heating which was a know problem Comment from : @Falcon256 |

This was the first computer I owned when I was like 5 years old It was a hand-me-down from my parents and it’s what made me interested in computers and now I’m going to school for Cybersecurity I remember playing The Sims 2 on it 😂 Comment from : @bgjck |
Try Windows 10 Comment from : @declanjamesbateson |
You are my new favorite techtuber The amount of tech nostalgia hits me hard in the feels Comment from : @sirfender6034 |

Laptop and gaming are 2 words that do not belong in the same sentence Comment from : @makinbac0n |
This would work best with win98se Comment from : @Synthematix |
I think the oldest "gaming" laptop I've had was a Dell XPS M1710 with a Core2Duo and a 7900GTX 😀 Comment from : @DaFoxQc |
To make things even more confusing, the Pentium 4M was actually based on a Pentium 3 because it was more efficient That’s also the reason why the original Core processors were P3-based The P4s were way too hot and power-hungry Comment from : @aaronisnotalive |
i own a Toshiba Tecra S1 from 2003 with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 and Pentium M 22ghz 2gb ram I think it would run a bit better than this dell machine brbrNice vid Comment from : @xXValentineXx |
I own one of these and man is it a furnace Comment from : @wh0_am_152 |
hey colingreat work on everything your show offerswell documented well thought out presentation Comment from : @miked4377 |
This would make a solid Windows 98SE gaming laptop Comment from : @that_colin_guy |
Got a Dell Inspiron 8600, running a Pentium-M 15ghz, GF Go FX5200 64MB video, 80GB IDE HD, and I've upgraded it to 15GB of RAM I threw all the old games (CivII, NfS I, II, III, and many more) on it Great old machine Comment from : @melterofsnowflakes |
I had this laptop in college I bought it new in 2004 I used it up until 2012 and upgraded it to 4gb of ram I actually had a lot of issues with it, one being that this laptop would constantly overheat, pentium 4s were notorious for that The other was the headphone jack failed in which Dell had to replace the motherboard on it The disc drive failed, battery failed, and hard drive failed all during Warranty too Towards the end of life it started to develop a line down the screen I do still own this laptop but haven’t turned it on in years This laptop forced me to go to apple This is one I do not miss Comment from : @gil_L |
I couldn't game on a fx5200 just out of principle That's like gaming on a GT710 Comment from : @randar3 |
I've got a stack of old laptops just far enough past their prime to be what you'd probably call e-waste, and I've had great luck installing XP on just about all of them Most are Core/Core2Duo era, GeForce 8600m/210m, but some as late as 3rd gen i7 with GTX 850m, and as long as you have a USB Floppy drive to load SATA drivers I've found you can get just about everything working, and even the wimpiest GPU can game like a champ when it's that many generations newer From what I've read, you can generally go as far as Intel 3rd gen or AMD Bulldozer for CPU, GeForce 900 series or AMD 500 series for GPU before you lose XP support Can't speak definitively but that has been the case so far for me, and if you shop around for laptops just a few generations further back you can pretty much buy them by the pound Great for throwing an XP lan party Comment from : @k7a |
The link to your intro music is dead Comment from : @RadiiRadium |
Really hope the internal product development name for that laptop was Van Halen Comment from : @adamklopfenstein9440 |
I had a machine from this family growing up It feels weird to think of it as retro tech, but at the same time exciting to see coverage of something so niche that also connects with me on a deeply personal level brbrThank you for this! Comment from : @AbacusManify |
I used to have the 5100 amazed that i was able to upgrade the GPU to a Radeon 9200 64MB, and it ran everything I could throw at it Max Payne 2 was the last game i played on it before moving it on Comment from : @SuperGourmetguy |
I really miss the 00s era of laptops Modular, Stylish, easily repairable and durable Comment from : @9852323 |
I just bought a Windows XP laptop on eBay, I wanted one from this era as I only used XP desktops growing up Ending up buying an HP Pavilion ZD8000, a 17" beast of a "laptop" with a desktop P4 3Ghz and a radeon x600 Weaker than my HD 2600 Pro in my desktop but can run older games at native 1440x900 or newer games like Half-Life 2 and Far Cry at reduced res It can even run Doom 3 at playable framerates at 800x600 Would love to put a P4 38Ghz in it but those things are like $150 on eBay, no way Comment from : @lukehussey2918 |
There are some older WH40K games I wouldn't mind playing again, like Rites of War Comment from : @beefgoat80 |
I'd rather pound nails on my toes than ever use an FX5200 again Comment from : @Stormy2142 |
Ah, rest in Piece, i had one of these but they have a major defect, their bios corrupts extremely easily and cannot be repaired, really sucked Comment from : @saikothesergal |
I'm not sure I understand "XP gaming", shouldn't most games from that era still run fine on modern computers with Windows 10? Comment from : @_Thrackerzod |
This laptop's main problem is the GPU We know how bad the GeForce FX series was, and this is the mobile version of a low end model (and btw a RAM upgrade would help too) brI have a very similar one from Asus, but with a Mobility Radeon 9000, a desktop P4 28GHz and 1GB RAM Games like DooM 3, Painkiller, Call of Duty and Half-Life 2 run pretty nicely on somewhat high or medium settings But at 1024×768, the LCD's native resolution is too high for decent framerates Of course you can forget games like Crysis Comment from : @Hudee1985 |
I just use my Steam Deck for retro games Comment from : @djp1234 |
I saved an old Dell Inspiron 7500 from a school I work at They were clearing out a bunch of old tech that has been hanging about in storage since the 90s and I asked if I could take that one It's in pretty great cosmetic shape, but I need to get ahold of a power adapter before I can test itbrbrHoping it works I'm interested in having a decent Windows 98 machine again for the first time in many years If it's in working order, or I'm able to repair it if needed, I intend on swapping out the aging HDD for some compact flash storage I will give it a good cleaning inside and out and will replace the thermal compound as well Comment from : @radicalraccoon |
the games that i play with fx5500 was nfs 3 hot pursuit - aoe - starcraft - colin mc rae - quake 2 not too demanding but fun Comment from : @BlitzkriegGT |
I miss those dell laptops I had one recently and I have ram for those old laptops and want to sell it and I might have other parts too I'll have to look and those old laptops are much better than today's ones I think Comment from : @coreybabcock2023 |
With the latest bios running 2x 1gb sticks will run Windows 7 SP1 x86 home premium and professional, never tried ultimate though, I just didn't think ultimate would run that well Comment from : @Rolatnor |
The closest I got to 5150 was Van Halen, I feel you bro Comment from : @thaddeusmcgrath |
I have 2 inspiron 5100 laptops that still work, however one of my 5100 laptops has a bad ram slot Comment from : @Rolatnor |
Also D series lineup were beasts Comment from : @ZachariasEnislidis |
From what I read, Windows XP will support NVidia graphics up to Maxwell, but Optimus support requires Windows 7 or later So the highest performing Windows XP laptop would be a vista-era gaming laptop Comment from : @Dwedit |
I have the XGI Volari GPU module for that same model Comment from : @harryrickenbach5890 |
Don't be timid, use this laptop as your main rig Comment from : @eyejswije8860 |
I have 5 or 6 dells from this era They were given to me about 10 years ago Although I think yours may be newer Comment from : @astridsactionrc545 |
Happened upon a ThinkPad with, somewhat similar performance, a Mobility Radeon 9600 GPU Ran C&C Generals quite well, and one game that refused to even boot on win10 system Quite nice keyboard, too For 20€, a solid choice for some xp gaming Comment from : @Kumimono |
