b*/b PLEASE READ b*/b Hi All, it appears there was previously a bit of a mixed bag of compatibility depending on what OS and CPU you have had Essentially Adobe appeared to be running a 'beta' which they called 'preliminary', and now this appears to be the '10 release' or 'final candidate' For example the M1 version was running under Rosetta 2 in emulation, thus not native There is still not compatibility for all CPU's and OS's but it is greatly expanded now, plus some people said the 'preliminary' version was not as high quality as the current version Reading through the comments below you can see there are many different experiences for end users I have a follow up video dropping shortly :) Sorry for the confusion, it has not been a version 1 roll out from the start from Adobe You can also see other outlets believed that ON1 was the first version - from Nikon Rumours 'I think this is the first software package that supports that format ' nikonrumorscom/2022/10/11/on1-photo-raw-2023-released-with-support-for-nikon-z9-he-raw-format-filesaspx/ The good news is all of us using HE and HE* have now even more RAW editing options Wink Comment from : Matt Irwin Photography |

Hello Matt Merry Christmas and Happy New Years Comment from : James Bandes |
HE and HE* are Nikon's new Pronouns 😇 Comment from : Hrishikesh Rao |
I seriously hope it can be done with all Z bodies and isn't something that was added to the Z9 soc Comment from : jeffry de meyer |
Capture One 22 (1541) now supports Nikon Z9 compressed files (HE* & HE) 😎 Comment from : felipepl |
Matt I have been using this file type from my Z9 with lightrroom classic for some months now Comment from : Craig Milne |
I missed it too!👍🏾🙏🏾 Comment from : Eugene Maynard |
I prefer Capture One but I just cannot bring myself to pay them a single cent extra until HE* is supported Noe of the “features” they offer have any relevance for me I am unimpressed by minor improvements in Capture One They charge too much for their upgrades anyway So I will wait or use Adobe instead It is a pity because I would like to ditch Photoshop I cannot do that until Capture One decides to put much more effort into Software support for the Z9 Comment from : Gr1ff1D0 |
I finally got my Z9 a couple weeks ago and did not realize there was any issue as it worked with LR I guess I got lucky not getting it sooner Comment from : David Kirschenbaum |
Matt just seen a post stating the latest update to Capture One 22 has the new codecs as well so you should be good to go Comment from : Dave Reid |
I’m confused I’ve been using HE* in my z9 since May with Lightroom Any ideas? Comment from : Acronym Photography |
Soooo I have been using HE* in LR for awhile now and the files came in sort of noisy, what happens now to those files? Are they stuck as is? Or will the new update affect all files, whether already imported or will it only improve new Imports? Comment from : Paul Dunlop |
Adobe products have supported HE/HE* months ago February at least Comment from : Yo! Photo Dude |
Did I miss something? I've been successfully opening using HE* RAW files natively in Adobe Camera Raw since at least this past May Comment from : Robert Falconer |
Apparently Capture One updated to support HE and HE* today (17 October 2022) Comment from : Boris Galos |
Capture one announced that they are supporting the HE raw now, version 1541 (latest update to this date) Comment from : Wassim Jelassi |
Hi Matt, great video Please do more testing! :-)) Comment from : Pierre-Louis Herin |
The tech should, perhaps, roll out to any other Expeed 7 cameras… and there are so many to choose from! Expeed 7 users rejoice🤪 Comment from : Peter Parker |
I'm working on a windows 10 computer and have been using HE* since my first day with the Nikon Z9, just before christmas last year Comment from : Artlight Optics - PCP Long Range Shooting |
Excellent news 👏 Comment from : NIkCan |
Great for everyonebrAs a primarily sports shooter I was always interested in the HE and HE* files To be able to use them in my normal workflows now is just what i need Comment from : Chris Thomas |
Hopefully we will see DxO Pure Raw 2 integration with HE* And perhaps DxO will give us DeepPRIME XD in Pure Raw also Comment from : Keith M |
For you Capture One users Capture One just released 1541 and it supports both HE* and HE raw, just upgraded and tried it out Comment from : Ron Skinner |
Any difference in noise levels between the formats? Comment from : Mike Harris |
I hope they add it to other cameras Comment from : Carlos André Viana |
Does this also mean that Adobe has improved its RAW file processing? I remember your video a while back about some pretty drastic differences in quality / noise between Adobe and Capture One (pretty sure it was Capture One) the Z9's RAW files Comment from : Craig C |
I used LRC (on my MacBookPro and Mac Studio) on HE/HE* files from the Z9 a very long time ago I am guessing April 2022brReleased yesterday - Capture One 22 (1541) is a service pack containing new camera & lens support, bug fixes, and quality of life improvements -- that includes Support for Nikon Z9 Lossy Compressed filesbrMore importantly -- it would be good if more than DVR18 was able to work with NEV file format AND Apple Mac stopped treating them as audio files Comment from : Andy Miller Photo UK |
Just tested it minutes ago after I watched your video… something weird… it seems that Topaz Denoize AI works with HE and HE* with the plug-in… but not with the stand alone version!!!😵💫 LR seems noticeably better than it was with those files… difficult to tell what files really look the best at 8000 iso… almost look the same after went from Denoize… (adding: the output files is exactly the same size after DenoizeAI (260Mo) Comment from : Skye PRF |
Hello, Matt I have been using HE2 and Photoshop from the start and it's all just worked I must of been doing something wrong Ask have had my Z9 for the last 6 or 7 months It seem to have been working very well Keep well, keep safe and enjoy using your kit Comment from : John Hughes |
i think it would be much, much better to have an open compressed lossless formatbrregarding that lossy format: noise is always difficult to compress maybe you can find strong contrasts on a noisy background like jewelries on sand or rice that might be a difficult task for the compression algorithm Comment from : Stefan Weilhartner |
Can't wait to get that in my beloved DxO Photolab 6, since when i'm shooting RAW it's HE* only ! Comment from : Arnaud Lerondeau |
Thank You, Matt! Been waiting for this announcement all year Hard to believe nobody made a big stink of this when it was launched Appreciate you keeping us in the loop - I sent this video out to a handful of my Z9 shooter friends Cheers Comment from : Benjamin Muller |
Been using HE* and HE raw in the latest version of ON1 Photo Raw 2023, they look great, still waiting for the update to Capture One Comment from : Ron Skinner |
Hi Matt Like @t1mothy1, I've been using HE* in LR since I got my Z9 in March We're still waiting for previews on M1 I haven't noticed a big difference lately Maybe I haven't looked closely enough The N-Raw is another matter Wish that was useable in Final Cut I haven't used it because I don't want to learn another NLE (Resolve) Comment from : Raymond Parker |
Yeah do more testing please Matt :) Thanks for the video Comment from : John Valean Baily |
i am still concerned about the future more than see or not the files in the thumbnails! HE* is undistinguible (can see objectively the difference) from the NEF files in the Nikon software, which it was not the case with LR (I have to retest it with the new releases and my Mac Studio-M1- new setup) BUT what will be the situation in few years do I have to convert all y files in DNG??? Why use the HE* if I need to convert my files after? more frame in the buffer??? May be for some specific needs but 20 frames /sec is already a huge mess to manage :) Comment from : Skye PRF |
Hi Matt, I've been using HE* since I received my Z9 in July Using Lightroom Classic on a 2015 imac fusion and an M1 Macbook pro Never been aware of a problem but just an amateur shooter Comment from : Geoff Field |
Hey Matt, LR support HE & HE* months now (I think February if I remember correctly) but not as NX as many users have reported Doesn't read them 100 correctly, maybe now it does, we will see Comment from : Terry Kontopoulos |
Seems like it would be a no brainer to put the HE* into a Z8 or any newer model above 24Mp Comment from : Steve Thompson |
But when will it happen for Capture One????? Comment from : Brian Dandridge |
Great news, nice video, thanks! Now about that hat😂 Comment from : Dominic Lester |
I am awaiting for pergear card review Comment from : Prakash Satam |
I am interested how HE* compares when using high Iso or you need to recover the shadows Comment from : TheCarsandmore |
It would be an interesting test to see how long it takes for the buffer to fill between the file types Comment from : Todd Teulon |
Fantastic News Comment from : Peter Betts |
I just downloaded the latest Capture One (1541) - which opens the compressed raw Nikon files Comment from : Shane Baker |
Weird been shooting with HE Raw z9 since the start of the yearmaybe the noise will be better tho Comment from : Skylark Media |
the ongoing issue that has not been resolved, and I believe its an APPLE issue is that the NEF files from Z9 still do not show a thumbnail icon in the finder for the actual photo for the NEF All you see is the generic NEF icon The Jpg does of course show its thumbnail icon The NEF doesn't Files from the D850 easily show their thumbnail but since I review my files simply in the finder this is quite problematic Since NEFS cannot be reviewed this is the problem that remains Sure ACR opens them up in photoshop CC and they can be worked on but this issue is taking along time to fix thank you Comment from : GLENN LOSACK |
Thanks for the info Matt, I haven't been able to use the Z9 raw files in Adobe Lightroom since I bought the camera in June Now I can stop shooting in jepg (not that there is anything wrong with the files from the Z9, but I'd rather shoot raw) Comment from : Craig Aikin |
This is good news I have the Adobe suite so I did not want to buy another app Now I guess I better start taking a look at editing my RAW files It's a good thing that I have been shooting both RAW and JPEG And there is more great new Matt, I got the Calendar! I do think we will see the Expeed 7 in more cameras Comment from : JRodPhotoART |
Great video Matt! Just for your information, I have been using HE* files on my Z9 ever since I received it on December 23 last year with Adobe Lightroom with no problem at all The support was „preliminary“ though and only recently the support was properly implemented Comment from : t¥mothy1 |
