You actually need a degree to become a UK police officer There is a “professional policing” degree that is approved by the college of policing you can study You can also join with any degree or you can earn your degree while on the job, although this is mostly aimed at older candidates perhaps coming from a military or security background Once you have a degree your actual police training is separate

NI had 'the Troubles' - decades of political division and terrorism leading to a militarised type of policing( for many decades requiring armoured vehicles and fortified police stations) Remnants of fear and occasional tensions sadly require the lingering shadow of armed police However this is due to terrorism and political unrest not for your average person or crime on the street Went to NI once and loved it- very friendly people Would definitely visit again!

I still love the fact that if you are lucky enough to see a patrolling officer they are very approachable and will help people and tourists with directions or lical advice Our force has the attitude that thry serve the people- tax payers- so must remain approachable and part of the community who will often give them titbits of info on crimes or suspcious things in their neighbourhood

The definition of assault in the UK is broad and the police have a zero-tolerance policy, saying discriminating words and spitting at police officers would be considered an assault and added onto the charges you face the judge will make you pay compensation to the officer for thembrbrI think this probably accounts for many of the reported assaults on officers

Before the Peel we had parish runner, so each parish council would hire a few big men to act as 'police', but really more like bouncers with the power of arrest They couldn't chase people over boundaries, so over a few streets in cities And mostly just picked on people that couldn't fight back, moving on homeless people, and arresting people in debt (Not much changed but hey)
