I was just told (here in NC) that the documentation fee has to be equal for everyone due to anti-discrimination lawsbrbrThis is what the sales manager told me:brbr"Every dealership has one and while your right that NCs is high compared to some other states ours is inline with the market and in many cases lower than our competitors Some of the money is used to pay for the things you're reffering to but we're absolutely making some of our profits on the service that is provided for that charge just like any other service we provide Keep in mind the true "padding" you've mentioned below is actually an addendum (which we don' t have and will never have) which is taking place at literally every single other Toyota store in the Raleigh metro and as mentioned we do not add these artificial $1000 (or more) mark ups to any of our vehicles" Comment from : johdirt784 |

As a resident of Ohio I question any statement of "law requires to charge it" and "law requires us to charge everyone the same" and I only found two ORC Ohio Revised Codes that pertain to the doc feebrbrORC 131707 states "A documentary service charge customarily and presently being paid on May 9, 1949, in a particular business and area may be charged if the charge does not exceed two hundred fifty dollars per sale"brbrORC 4517261 states "A motor vehicle dealer may contract for and receive a documentary service charge for a retail or wholesale sale or lease of a motor vehicle"brbrThere is no "must charge" and no "charge everyone the same" other than a limitation of the fee Comment from : Geoff Urbanek |

Hi Kevin Your advice also applies to Canadian car dealerships I recently purchased a new vehicle in the Toronto area Dealer tried to stick me with a $699 "dealership fee" as well as a $760 tire insurance fee This was bbefore/b I went to see the business manager to finalize the paper work! Remembering your advice, I absolutely refused to pay either I didn't even bother to ask the dealer to deduct the prices from the vehicle, I just started to gather my stuff ready to leave They quickly crossed out the items and didn't put up a fuss Thank you!
