Another great video for all of us "vision impaired" machinists I really like what you've done here, and I definitely know a good idea when I steal it! I think I will go the route of the Hardinge - large white non reflective plastic gears with large black lettering Easier with a CNC 4th axis and CNC I think that there could be a market for making these - as it would benefit any manual machinist today

Mr Pete, excellent video, I just made 2" dials for my 9" Atlas and all the jugs you made also They work great

Donald Snyder
GENIUS! Husband says He loves the way you did the review on the first one (#176) Again, he says he's not a machinist but thoroughly enjoyed these videos and ALL of your videos Love your comments on the "Safety Nazis"!

I came across this video whilst searching for info regarding the compound on my Logan 1820; is there any tolerance for "end play" or "chucking" along the axis of the compound screw? As that first nut (against the dial) is tightened this play is reduced, eventually to the point that the dial is pushed too tight against its threaded partner It seems there is supposed to be a thrust bearing or washer between these two Any thoughts or insight?

my method was to use a one inch travel dial indicator with a pancake magnet on the back and stick it to the cross-feed ways and read the travel directly off the compound and I might say more accurately than the graduations on the hand dialit worked in most casesbut not all

Mature Patriot Machining
How did we build the first atomic weapons, be the first to officially break the sound barrier, and first and only to put a man on the moon, all without DROs I did some very accurate work in high school some 50 yrs ago with out a DRO I know they are maybe more accurate, and faster but I cannot justify the cost Get your cataracts fixed My mom said she didn't know how wrinkled her face was until she got hers fixed She was amazed at how much better her vision was after surgery Keep teaching my friend

Hi Pete I've just noticed my compound slide dial looks like it was press fitted over the actual handle I'm wondering if you have an email I can maybe send you a photo to see what you think If it's not to much trouble

Really hope you can give me some positive answers As I don't want to give up on her I know she can look great again As I'm doing a full restoration every nut bolt etc but am getting a bit disheartened

As you know I'm just starting a complete restoration of a 1939 Colchester master 6 inch lathe brThe thing is after removing yrs and yrs or rust my compound slide dial is very pitted And just barely make out the witness mark and all the graduation lines on the dial But it is not great If I was to try and find a very good machinist do you think it would be possible for them to repair by removing all the pitting and restoring all the graduations and witness mark As you know these dials are hard to find these days and would really like to keep the originals brWould it be possible to save them Just asking as i value your opinion because of the fact you have many yrs of being a machinist brI'm pretty gutted as im finding things that is really starting to upset me I just can' not understand how previous owners don't take the time to look after these beautiful precision machines by just keeping them serviced, well oiled now and again So pitting doesn't occur

Hi Pete I'm honestly am enjoying your channel The way you explain things in a simplistic manner for us that are new to lathe machines Is honestly a great help Your an absolute gentleman to taking the time in this hectic life we lead To teach us things with regards to lathe and milling Just want to share my gratitude and a big thankyou for all the hours time & work uploading these videos I'm very grateful that I've found your channelbr As it's one of the best I have seen Thanks again Pete Now I do have a question if you don't mind me asking

Hello,  I have an old 12 inch Craftsman Atlas Lathe I Bought dials from Tall Grass Tools for it they come in 100 per rev or  200  and are larger in Diameter he also sells  the backing plate for them they come ready to bolt on or machine kit form and available for the compound  I have used in the past a small fishing lead split shot in the  screw hole instead of brass works good I also am a Machinist by trade and an old tool and machine  junkie I have the lathe I spoke of and a burke millrite milling machine and two Atlas milling machines both 12 speeds  one with a Rusnok milling head a Southbend shaper  Jet drill press (Chinese works ok but not like old American iron) and a small Taig lathe love to tinker and restore to operating condition but most of all use them not building some Mantle piece like some of the guys on Youtube when the only Chip their fully Restored and Painted Machine will see is the Potato Chip falling out of their mouth when showing it to Friends Keep up the good work Love your Videos  you remind me of my shop Instructor I had in the mid 1970s  showing my age

Your timing is uncanny, professor  It wasn't more than a week ago that I decided my crossfeed dial on my Logan lathe was almost too small to read even without cataracts  My compliments on your ingenuity in using the saw blade as a dividing circle  IMTS was interesting especially the 3-D additive printing technology

Hello PetebrI am really enjoying your videos on dial replacement I have a 9" south bend (war baby) and it too had small dials I did a conversion to larger dials on that lathe and ran into the same problem of the cross slide hitting the dials I used the Steve Wells method and increased the length of the cross feed screwnot really the threaded portion but rather the length that the dial and handle fit onto it meant making new longer bushings, but now my cross slide has a full length of travel Is that possible for the logan lathes?brbrWayne

That's nice Now I want to make larger dials for my Logan I wanted to do it anyways for the purpose of graduating it for dia reduction

Tubalcain, my grandfather was a machinist and metal fabricator, making large industrial machines that formed sheet metal But he never offered to teach my sister and I; watching you is like being in the shop with himbrThank you

Viesturs Siliņš
Thank you for the nice video series! And it is nice of you to upload them all at once so we don't have to wait :)brbrBy the way, are you filming in 720i ? Because, at least for me, the videos have much 'line blur' when something is moving in the picture Could it be possible to film in 720p, that is, without interlacing instead? Or maybe the problem is in my end or I misunderstand somethingbrbrAny way, thanks for tour videos, you are one of my favorite YouTubers! To see a new engaging, educational video in my subscriptions feed is so much better that watching TV after work
