@pedroagtuca905
Hello Mr pete I have the same problem on my Logan 1922 QCGB I need to replace the same gear What is the ebay part number on the gear you modified ?
Comment from : @pedroagtuca905

@rikujkoivisto
Hi! I was wonder why don`t you do those grars your self? Everyone here knows that you can do what ever you want to

@danedewaard8215
The joy you had after fixing that gear was transfered to me!!! The was a very enjoyable video!!!!!

@trishakathlene3491
I wanted to thank you for giving me the knowledge and confidence to change the old, original leather belt to a serpentine belt on my Logan 820, 1945 lathe I inherited from my uncle I hardly ever used it until I had grandkids and now I’m finding all kinds of reasons to use it I used to live in Chicago and moved up to Kenosha and loving it I wish you the very best and hope you keep making educational videos
Comment from : @trishakathlene3491

@TheLuksk8
Hiii, my grandpa has the same Logan Lathe 820 with the gear box in really good conditions, just a little dirt in all parts I had to watch the whole video, interesting, b'cause it's super dirty greetings from Chile 🇨🇱

@roybrower912
Just what I needed, Thanks so much had my 299 about 5 days gears are binding here

@FilterYT
Fantastic video, thank you very much!
Comment from : @FilterYT

@jmquez
It’s 8 years later, and the Logan I bought has the same bad gear 😂😂 I wonder how many of us will use this specific video in centuries to come
Comment from : @jmquez

@lstein3372
You could have left the old gear in the cluster, cut off the damaged part of the smaller gear, and bored out the remaining bit of the small gear to fit the new gear It might have been a little easier
Comment from : @lstein3372

@pophamlarry
Awesome job Sir! I wish I was just half as intelligent as you are🙂

@craigcorbin4098
@mrpete222 I have a Logan 200 with a QCGB Model 820, that has the same gear bad Can you let me know which eBay gear you purchased for this repair? That gear from Logan is now $280! Thanks so much!
Comment from : @craigcorbin4098

@bigalremington
Thank you, Tubalcain Very informative I have learned a boat-load from your many videos Oh, and your auctions, that you "are not going to do any longer", I love 'em - my kinda guy, Tubal ps I am in the process of buying my first used lathe - SB Model A, 9 inch
Comment from : @bigalremington

@EddieVBlueIsland
I damaged TWO of those gears in my Logan 200 when I hit the screw advance by accident while re-facing a faceplate using the crossfeed I did not know Logan still was in business (this was before the internet back in 1989!) and I would have bought them at the drop of a hat for $125 So I ordered by mail several #3 & #4 cutters from Travers tool and cut my own out of SAE 8620 stock - both gears - infact I made several sets as spares - I even carburized them and spot brazed them after hard turning away the side of tha larger gear and turned end of the small gear's carburized layer My gears were brazed instead of keyed
Comment from : @EddieVBlueIsland

@janionmakes11
This video gives a great insight into how those quick change gearboxes work, and oodles of information besides Thanks for showing so much detail It makes me think about designing my own gearbox
Comment from : @janionmakes11

@gunchief0811
A student in a Machinest college and I'm also an apprentice in a machine shop that repairs lathes and CNC machines I'm learning a lot it's a good trade it's very important and also intricate and tedious work But I'm constantly learning it's a five year Apprenticeship
Comment from : @gunchief0811

@jerrypeal653
More satisfying when you fix it “Right “ yourself! Nice work there Mr Pete
Comment from : @jerrypeal653

@billsmith5166
"Now I'm starting to think that $199 was a bargain" Thanks for the laugh!
Comment from : @billsmith5166

@craigtate5930
Great video as always! I just had a thought after watching this vid, if a person was so inclined, and assuming there is enough room at the top of the gear box A hole could be drilled in opposite sides of the gear box the OD of a piece of copper tubing Drill a series of holes in the copper tube that align more or less with all the gears in the box That could make a nice method of lubricating the gears from the gearbox side
Comment from : @craigtate5930

@dizzolve
one hell of a repair- nicely done Was just thinking -since you actually like a slower speed I wonder if you considered a different size gear than the original -since you were replacing it anyhow
Comment from : @dizzolve

@01Jackpine
I know this is unrelated to the gearbox but I have a 10” Logan (Montgomery Wards) and I recently acquired a Lever-matic collet chuck and collets and I’d like to know how to attach the linkage for the lever Do you have any experience with this? Thanks I enjoy all your videos
Comment from : @01Jackpine

@kennethdahl4791
I have that same gear box and the gear you replaced has a broken tooth on mine The tooth is not broken completely off only the corner leaving about 2/3 of the tooth in place and I think I will leave it alone
Comment from : @kennethdahl4791

@dizzolve
9:35 haha
Comment from : @dizzolve

@tobyw9573
You might want to check for a proper shear pin in the gear train There is something about them that makes people want to put broken drill bits in them
Comment from : @tobyw9573

@tobyw9573
Colchester wants 0005” clearance on the gears gaged with a piece of paper or manila folder, as I recall
Comment from : @tobyw9573

@RossMarsden
The saying is "The proof of the pudding is in the eating thereof" This means that how good the pudding is (will the carriage advance along the bed) will become evident when you eat it (when you turn the lathe on and engage the feed) br"The proof is in the pudding" does not make any sense brI love your videos Subscribed and notified Thanks
Comment from : @RossMarsden

@lesstreble
Outstanding! I found this so informative that I watched it twice Thanks again Mr Pete for another classic
Comment from : @lesstreble

@vinodkumar-ic1ku
good and informative video
Comment from : @vinodkumar-ic1ku

@lantraxco6165
Not to be nitpicky but couldn't you have left the old gear pinned in, faced it flush and bored it to accept the new gear? Just curious Nicely done!
Comment from : @lantraxco6165

@Tdubs350
By any Chance do you have the link or part number for that gear you got on eBay? All the ones that I found have a set screw Any help would be great thanks for your time and videos!

I would have loved to have been one of your students
Comment from : @tri-forceblades3123

@Clackvalve2
I know this video was uploaded quite some time ago but I thought it may help some of your dedicated followers to know that the gearbox you feature is known as the Norton gearbox, and there are many lathes of that era that use the Norton style The Logan is of course one make, I think I am correct when I say that South Bend were the first, My Boxford (which is an evolved copy of the great South Bend 9 inch & Heavy Ten) My Sable also uses this box and the well known (Here in the UK) is the ever popular Myford and I am sure there are many more that I don't know of brbrHaving said that, although looking almost identical, to the untrained eye, there are differences between makes and even models I know from bitter experience, that a 9 inch Sable AUD will not fit onto a Boxford AUD because there is a small discrepancy in hole centers There are obvious differences between Metric and Imperial boxes the obvious one being the Leadscrew
Comment from : @Clackvalve2

@MrPatdeeee
As always, another classic bit of instruction You are a very fine teacher Mr Pete We are all blessed to be able to see such wizardry as you possessI thank Jesus for you dear brother
Comment from : @MrPatdeeee

@richardhag1
Why does the lathe have back gears and a quick change gear box? If you change the back gears, won't that mess up the ratios for the quick change gear box?
Comment from : @richardhag1

@b1aflatoxin
Now that was cool! :) brI must say, good job on sound, camera, and editing! -Some of us take that for granted when watching your vids
Comment from : @b1aflatoxin

@TheRjjrjjr

@ronicard
Mr Pete, some people were just born to do certain things and there's no doubt you were born to be a teacher brPersonally, I'm very glad that you didn't stop with just teaching high school but now are teaching those of us who watch your videos on the internet Thank you for taking the time to shoot, edit, narrate and post these videos They're awesomebrbrI've been restoring vintage motorcycles for a while now and doing a tiny bit of custom fabrication on them I have been thinking of buying a lathe for the times when I might need to fabricate or fix a part Any recommendations on a particular brand/size for someone like me to get? I don't mind spending up to about $2000 on the lathe itself and I am aware that I will invest more later on the attachments, tools, etc to go with it Specifically, I wonder if I would be better served buying something like the Grizzly 10"x22" new for about $1500 or trying to purchase a used, older, larger lathe like the Logan, Atlas, South Bend, etc?brbrThanks again for taking the time on these videos!
Comment from : @ronicard

@izzynutz2000
Hey Mr Pete my father and I had a Logan late model 1922 and we had some gearbox issues with it I pulled the gearbox apart just as you had and got the gear out and send it to Von Wiese Gear we have family that work for them and they rebuilt the gear I'm almost pretty sure it was the same lower gear for the slowest speed for the feed nice work I enjoy watching your videos
Comment from : @izzynutz2000

@roliver64111
JOB WELL DONE!!!!
Comment from : @roliver64111

@richardhaisley1
another thing about the small gear is that the bottom of the teeth is undercut to allow running clearance also the small gear always makes more revolutions
Comment from : @richardhaisley1

@richardhaisley1
when Logan makes the gears, they will use a gear hobber which is much fasterit wouldn't take five minutes to make each of them and even if it's low volume they would probably make 5 or 10 of each
Comment from : @richardhaisley1

@richardhaisley1
you are not supposed to ream oilight because it will seal the oil in also you can put it in a coffee can covered with 30wt oil heat it with a torch and allowed to cool will reoil the bearing
Comment from : @richardhaisley1

@79ojz
Mr pete I have Logan Lathe similar to this one, the problems I am having on my lathe is that I have a about 009 run out with any piece of stock I put in A noticeable wobble is apperant, making it difficult to get a good first cut with out removing a lot of material I changed the three chuck to a brand new one and no luck I've heard the spindle bearings go bad but have had no luck finding them Have you heard of this problem ? if so is there an easy fix ? or should I just consider the lathe bad ?
Comment from : @79ojz

Tubalcain, When you say "I may be going on about it a bit" It shows you have been a teacher ;) They always repeat themselves a lot as that is how Students learn ;)  (I have relatives who are teachers ;) Plus I take on pre-apprentices for practical placements and I HAVE to repeat as they are so used to high school and this is how they learn ;)
Comment from : @kathyquinlan5922

@triplecert
Just got that very gear in today Nice vid thanks
Comment from : @triplecert

@farerse
nice job! that's as good as the original expensive part is that lathe really "quiet" ? i thought it was kinda noisy but maybe it's supposed to be like that
Comment from : @farerse

@mrOnlinePolice
When you say that you have about 1/1000 of interference (4m19s) does that mean your bushing is bigger than the bore in the gear by 1/1000?
Comment from : @mrOnlinePolice

@W1VLF
Hello Tubalcain,  I watched lots of your videos and enjoy everyone of them This one in particular since I have the exact same gear in my transmission  Would you mind sharing the part number for that gear?  Thanks for taking the time to make all these videos !!brbr
Comment from : @W1VLF

@tcbetka
Just bought one of these Logan 820 lathes, and I can honestly say after watching thisI would of paid the $199brbrGreat repair and all, but if Logan Actuator has them, I would have just paid the money It's likely that that would be the last time you'd every have to do it--and you would get TWO new gears, as both in that cluster would be replacedbrbrGREAT videos though, on these Logan lathes Great things to see before getting started with the thing--the videos on the South Band and Craftsman lathes is also very useful as well, as there are significant similarities between all these units So thanks for making the effort to produce all of these invaluable resources
Comment from : @tcbetka

@shalafi4
I don't know if it would help for any future reference but I bTHINK/b that gearbox is either identical or has interchangeable parts to some South Bend model lathes

5 People in the world have no appreciation   Thank you so much for  all these great  vids  I just sold  my Atlas 12" to  a neighbor,  a  little BD-9N  to  a friend,  but still have an  SB 10K and 9"  for parts   AND   a Logan  200 in bad shape  Trying to decided  if to  put money into it  It has  only  a  few  change gears  and a broken  pulley gear   I am  NOT a machinist  LOL
Comment from : @fourfortyroadrunner

@acoow
14:00  Next time you have that gearbox off, drill some holes over each gear so that you can drip some oil right on top of them  Thread each hole for a small thumbscrew to let you get dirt from dropping in
Comment from : @acoow

@acoow
8 hours and you saved $75  $9375 per hour  You work cheap!  :-)brbrYour final assertion that the price was about right is right on the money
Comment from : @acoow

@fernandgeenevan8773
Good video, Pete! What I 'd like to point out, is the use of even or odd counts of teeth If you have two relating wheels with even numbers, that means that a damaged tooth will always meet the same counterpart and thus will not spread the wear evenly The same goes with debris or blocked up material between the teeth In some cases it 's just not possible, but in good gearbox design you'd like the odd numbers
Comment from : @fernandgeenevan8773

@Ujeb08
Another job well done!  Both the repair and the video were good stuff!  A lot of important info was covered - from gear basics to interference fits to plain bearing replacement  Most people can't or don't appreciate the value of a good machinist - you kinda "have to be one to know one"   Enjoy your videos immensely  Please keep them coming Ujeb08
Comment from : @Ujeb08

@bennyrlove
what did you paid for this gear?
Comment from : @bennyrlove

@dougspair
I once worked as the welder in a 10 man machine shop They used compressed air to blast off everything, and yesall the lathes were hammered, so were the 3 Bridgeports and 2 Radial arm drills
Comment from : @dougspair

@spokehedz
In shop class, we always were told that you should slip two sheets (Or one sheet folded in half) of notebook paper in the gear mesh so we would have good clearance
Comment from : @spokehedz

@Revoku
awesome videos, reminds me of bothering my dad while he was restoring a morris 8
Comment from : @Revoku

@MehmetSutas
Hi mrpete,brbrAn excellent video But when it was hard to find a gear with a long thick hub, i would consider press fitting a new gear over the old gear whose teeth were cut  I think it would be easier than machining a thin bushing But i am just an ameteur and my recommendation may create other problems that i can not foreseebrbrMehmet
Comment from : @MehmetSutas

@Patroand
My first lathe was an Atlas 5 years ago I had the same problem I try to repair it After many months, I retreat and sold it for 100$ I should have wait to see and listen to you Too late now If you say it's not an easy job, sure I believe you! And you have much more experience that I 😳
Comment from : @Patroand

@BernhardHofmann
Gosh, I hope the next owner watches these videos and appreciates the effort, time and knowledge it took to fix that gear

Absolutely fantastic!!! My father was a full Professor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical School back in the good old days He told me that often the best teachers were those that had the ability to work through each step of a problem, demonstrating how and why he made each decision that was made Students need to see the teacher's thinking process, so that they learn to reason through the issue in a logical fashion Teachers that instruct in this manner are the absolute top of the teacher pyramid They are rare, and YOU ARE ONE!!! You are definitely a gifted teacher, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I found you! You have taken what could have been a meal of cold, thick and tasteless oatmeal, and turned it into a repast fit for Epicurus' own son! I am as fascinated by learning to be a machinist as I was to become a medical doctor You and I are about the same age, and you, sir, are close to being a national treasure THANKS for not hiding your light under a bushel!
Comment from : @jpmilnor1850

@1otviii
very interesting I was wondering how a broken tooth could be fixed on one of these big cluster gears  You dont explain too much at all Very clear, and I get a real kick out of your sense of humor  I am starting to learn machining at 62, and your videos are priceless  Thanks a lot Tom

Gday mrpete,Ross from Australia,I have just retired as a Fitter machinist here in Australia  and as an apprentice Old Dennis my tradesman used to teach me to put a piece of newspaper between the change gears when adjusting them so that they weren't pushed together to hard and cause wear and be noisyI used to use any paper as long as it wasn't to thick or thin Cheers Ross

@claytondeich6518
Thanks Mr Cane, I have an Atlas 10" and know not to use compressed air to clean my lathe off I enjoy running my lathe, and I had a great shop teacher Back in the days when I was in school my teacher would have me do most of the repairs that you said were not being made Now I will take on most any thing that comes my way Oh, that gear box goes for about $500 or better on ebay
Comment from : @claytondeich6518

@tonydeleo7697
I found a Craftsman 12 inch lathe (10127430) on Craigslist  Price is right, looks good, from what I can see from the pictures  The ad states that when he purchased it, the quick change gear box came unmounted and he thinks it may be missing parts  Would it be difficult and expensive to find the parts?brI want to find a lathe and learn the ropes  I have watched your videos and am even more excited about my retirement dreambrThanksbrTonybrPort Hadlock

Lyle, as a guy who just loves this type of restoration and repair work on machines, I wanted to tell you to give the Extreme Pressure Lube #3 a try on the side gears They'll go even quieter and resist slinging off It silenced my south bend 13" Love that stuff
