wow these comments about US police officers treating people asking for help as hostile is crazy to me as a UK citizen As a child i was always taught that if i was in trouble and needed help to always approach a police officer and they would help/ protect me We complain about police here because they dont have the budget to deal with small crimes (stealing from shops, someone breaking ur car window etc) but im glad they arent like the US police that seem so ready to use lethal force against innocent people because they 'feel threatened' honestly if they are so jumpy they shouldnt be officers

I remember seeing a video of some American police coming over to the UK They were watching a training exercise of 3-4 cops arresting a "Man armed with a knife" and one of the American cops went "wow, we would have just shot him by now"

Many gun-owners in the UK are farmers who need to protect their livestock from predators and intruders There are also people in the hunting communities brOn a recent visit to Scottish Highlands, I saw a sign in a farm-cafe that said something along the lines of "crofters have the right to shoot strange dogs when they feel their herds of sheep are threatened" This sign has been put up because more and more irresponsible clueless visitors bring their dogs up there and think that they can open closed gates, unleash their dogs and let them run wild just because it is a vast piece of pasture They don't understand that lambs, sheep, particularly pregnant ewes can be spooked easily Many of them would miscarry, some of them just run off As the place I visited was on the coast, the sheep might fall into the sea On a walk by the seaside I witnessed a herd of sheep suddenly rush past me petrified, and an excited dog followed them The dog's owner was mortified, but no amount of regret could make it up if any of the sheep had been harmed Luckily it was not lambing season, and the sheep rushed towards inland

before the police in the uk wealthy land owners and other rich folks had local militia a lot of these were solders returning from the Napoleonic wars and were tasked with protecting their interests and that of their tenants but usually kept law and order in the local areas these militias usually had arms to protect against highwaymen and the such as for the gun deaths of officers uk vs usa is probably because guns are not a regular occurrence in our society and seeing armed officers is not a common sight unless they are really warranted

The reason for reduced police numbers is political, a lack of funding from government to pay for more officers Police are also underpaid for the role they carry out, so people are not necessarily encouraged into the role

I doubt if there's an average American, just as no-one is average in Britain The reduction in police numbers in Britain was a result of a stupid politcal decision to cut costs, but of course overall it had the opposite effect by increasing crime, although they tried to hide it by removing fraud from crime statisticsbrIn the normal course of duty, police officers are unarmed, except the Protection Command in London, and every police force has armed response units, and I often see their vehicles So to say they don't carrry guns is only partly true, and despite the lack of guns, they still manage to kill and injure too many innocent people Most public servants, including the police, are underpaid, but that is only because the UK government would rather reduce the tax that rich people pay Life in the UK has deteriorated during my lifetime, but I wouldn't even consider going to the gun-crazy USA

Cops hemet is made of metal It is for protection and also can be used as a weapon (get a cop headbutt and you will feel it) The original idea was to make them look taller and more intimidating, as well as provide protection from coshing They have shrunk a lot since they were introduced, and when taking about the armed police they look more like a swat team, they wear body armor and caps/armored helms instead

As a Londoner, I have never in my life heard anyone call a police officer a “bobby,” it’s a fairly old-fashioned name for them - most of us just call them police officers or coppers (though this may be different in less urban communities) Another fun fact is that “bobbies” isn’t the only name for them that comes from Sir Robert Peel, they were also called “peelers”

Just a quick things here I worked in the Met Police, as a civilian, for 21 years Much of that was involved in statistics The phrase ‘crime rate’ is NOT the same as ‘number of crimes’ Using simple numbers: in one year, let’s say there were 1 million crimes reported to the police And the following year, there were 2 million crimes reported to the police THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE CRIME RATE DOUBLED It is far more likely that majority of that increase is down to an increase in the number of people willing to report crime

Uk police have decreased in numbers due to a highly greedy goverment making sooo many cuts to funding that loads of police stations have shut down and the police cant afford to hire people that and alot of UK citizens have quite a mistrust for police because of corruption that exists within the force and they seemingly arrest and pester people over small petty crimes instead of tackling real issuses/there is a chance due to defunding they wont help you anyway
