I am in the process of transferring my collection to semi-hydro I ordered 25 liters of hydroton through Amazon, and am only rinsing it thoroughly, but is there a need to do more? And I’m also using self-watering pots, but I’m confused about fertilizers and tap water I only have tap water at my disposal is that going to be a deal breaker in a S/H setup? Thanks for any suggestions! Renee in Pennsylvania Comment from : Renee Tracey |

i will be testing leca shortly, thx to these vids, thx! Comment from : Norman Torok |

I ve got all the stuffs needed for a semi hydroponic experiment and I also have a slipper orchid "angle hair" for it but I am scared shitless now I love this orchid, it is not a big specimen but this is the only way that it can get hydration if I am going away( I like to grow orchid on tree otherwise) Any tips? Comment from : k lee |

I've been doing semihydro for 6 months now and am thrilled with the results Comment from : Sheryl Maiorano |
I have 90 of my orchids in S/H Phals, paph, oncidiums, miltoniopsis, cattleyas all loving it Den nobiles look a bit sad but I should have waited to repot until spring I have a lot of algae in my LED light orchids but it's the only negative and I can live with it I have some large cattleyas that have good root systems so I'm leaving them out of S/H for now until they are ready for division I find most orchids don't lose that many roots unless they're very old but cattleyas do lose them - but the new roots are totally fine Comment from : Alan M |
I have about 60 Orchids and now have some 35 in semi-hydro This suits my climate and the setup I have created to look after all of them Easy if I travel too I have to have all but mounted ones in semi-hydro by the end of the year My other reason for changing over was the lack of reasonably priced and avaiablility of Bark chip Comment from : Wilairat26a Toady |
I'm doing semi hydro, not only with orchids but experimenting with houseplants in s/h using growstones mix this small stones Most seem to love the switch over I was a bit concerned about my Epidendrum nocturnum, but the roots are looking great and it is putting out a new shoot so it's adapted I used the s/h principle in growing out many seedlings using 3 oz plastic bath cups with 3 holes above the bottom, and using perlite as a medium, and it worked very well with all but 1 species orchid flask Comment from : john mason |
I have several in semi-hydro cattleyas, phals, & oncidiums At first I didn't like the algae but since learning that algae can be beneficial to the plants I leave it I do flush the pots once a month with clear water I love being able to see when the orchids need to be watered no guessing In the winter some people use heating pads but so far mine have been ok Comment from : Barb Townsend |
is this the same as using small pebbles/ gravel/rocks?? and can you show how to move a new plant from bark media to this inert media please as i did put some of my fwc phals in leca and the roots did start to die and wondering if the middle was too wet as you indicated Comment from : Christina Bickley |
I use it for some of my babies--I also use red volcanic rocks which I like as well seems to hole moisture longer and more evenly Have you tried it? I found I had to break it up into fairly small pieces Comment from : ned flinn |

Hey Danny! I used Seramis for a while and realized it's not working well for my home environment Recently I moved back to organic (good old orchiata bark) my orchids seems to like it I have one precious orchid seedling (Vanda Coerulea Supra f5) that is very sad looking and it is my first orchid that I test for semi-hydroponic I have nothing to loose and it seems like your orchids love it Also I found spidermites on my Catasetums I mostly use Persimillis mites that work GREAT but they are out of stock 😱 I guess I'll follow your paraffin oil method Thank you for your great video! Comment from : Mor H |
